There are valid reasons for "gaming" brands if it uses the correct HW setup such as including better 3D hardware audio as it has been proven to increase FPS at lower resolutions, better slot designs for multi-gpu (back then, moot point now), lower latency PS2 connectors for KB /Mouse and similar competitive enhancements. But gaming on TR would be similar nonsensical marketing as making gaming edition of workstation, enterprise or data server products... what gamer would use that kind of HW (high core count, low frequency per core), ECC RAM, NAS, or other redundancy... Just curious about the weird thinking behind it.

Today? Maybe but all ALCxxxx sound chips uses the CPU for processing, AFAIK. Its not a dedicated HW DSP that offloads the cpu, so will some CPU cycles. Correct me if I am wrong here. I know the X-Fi DSP was a pretty damn powerful audio processor but not sure how fast or good those new Creative Lab Recon audio chips are. It may be some simple ARM cpus for all we know with some software processing behind it.

Yes, the ALC1220 does eat up some CPU cycles, its a very good onboard sound chip, none the less. I think Asus still does the Xonar cards, but I think they are C-Media.
