Zen 3 architecture (used in Ryzen 5000 series) is less than a year old. You must have been confused by the nomenclature somewhere. Depending on how late next year Zen 4 appears, Zen 3 might have needed to last for two years, but on the other hand the version with 3D cache could be called Zen 3+.

2 years to be precise Zen3 hit market in November 2020(11 months ago) Zen4 will be probably Q4 so at worst 2 Years and 1 month after ZEN3

What is wrong with cpu sticking around for 3 years eventually? The issue is when they sell you the same cpu with different name, but every year. A cpu lasting 3 years as top product on the market, as the GPUs, would be a gamer dream.

I don't dream of stagnation, but not sure my wallet could handle yearly mega changes such that my system becomes obsolete in 2 years. Life is expensive enough already. Also agree with @asturur, if cpu is top tier for 3 years, would feel like a great investment.

with all the (deserved) crap that intel gets for rebranding the same 14nm core all over,9900K was an incredible investment for gaming 3yo,it's not the top dog anymore but it's still a top tier cpu for high refresh gaming,and it's got plenty left in it with 8c/16t I personally like the fact that amd and intel will be leapfrogging each other once intel gets its manufacturing node straight,nothing wrong with +10/15% every 6 months or so,just more options for me to look into and buy once a great deal appears. upgrading every gen/half gen like r5000 to r5000 3d cache is another thing,but there's nothing wrong with playing the waiting game.

There's been quite a lot of performance boosts [youtube=wAX1lh985do] Personally I won't rush to DDR5. It's gonna be slower memory in the beginning anyway.

Games will run perfectly on a regular 8/16 CPU for many years. That's what the current consoles have as well, and the majority of AAA games are developed either for both PC and console or the consoles and later ported for PC (if ported). It wouldn't surprise me if the next console generation still had 8/16, although with more IPC. Of course there are some games that benefit from more, but they are a minority. Game studios won't release games practically nobody can play, you know. It would be a financial suicide. I believe you can still play most games on a 4/8 CPU, with some compromises. It's the GPU folks need to worry about, unless one tried to save too many pennies when picking the CPU. Due to the console hardware, I wouldn't recommend below 8 cores to gamers. People do other things with their PCs, in addition to playing games. Those other things often can use far more cores than games. Although Intel was holding games back as well during the decade of degeneration, but even more Intel was hurting people really needing cores for productivity stuff. They could go for the extreme editions, but unless they were actually making money with their projects, it wasn't necessarily feasible.

Most games on PC have higher quality settings than what are available on consoles. And some of these settings hit on the CPU side, such as greater geometry detail, more complex physics, longer draw distances, higher LODs, more NPCs, etc. Consoles have APIs that are a bit more lower level than DX12 and Vulkan on PC. And then there's the simpler front end of nVidia's graphics cards, that require a greater CPU usage on DX12. Consoles also have dedicated controllers for IO and compression and decompression of data from SSD. On PC it's still being done by the CPU. Having a CPU with better IPC, might result in faster load times. Finally, after 6 cores, games scale better with IPC than with more cores.

My 5600x is kick ass tbh. I just wanna get a 6800x and put the 5600x in my HTPC. I dont regret getting rid of the 2700x, it was too slow for my GPU. The min fps was alot lower then the 5600x. 2700x though was such a damn good cpu for the price. One of my favorite cpus I have ever owned besides my X5650.

The ryzen 3D (maybe i should trademark that name 😛) it will be am4 so i believe 5xx mb will get support for it ( almost 100% sure) . Now 4xx support is clear as day those mbs can support from 1xxx up to 5xxx with no issues , so it will all come down to if amd allow it they seem eager to stop support as soon as possible the people getting angry at it is what made em re-evaluate , so there is a chance the 4xx mbs will support it ... It comes down to amd really.

man 2700X with his 6800XT ? you must be kidding 2700X is slower than the smallest r3000,3300X.It's barely an entry level cpu for modern high end gpus.It would hold back 6800XT big time.

I am very tempted to wear the 2700x again on the x570 along with the 6800 just to really see how it will behave in games, but I do not have the required time maybe in the coming weeks.

Onlyin some cases like high fps/high refresh if you're playing in 4k the differences I doubt will be very noticeable if at all
