That seems kind of weird and unnecessary.

That explains the strange countdown to space website we saw the other week

Seems a bit expensive too....

what a stupid idea?!?!?! Wasting money for what? proving that theyr chips survive space? (they do anyway.. ) go home AMD...that money could be spent way better...Pffff... Idiocrazy 2.0...

How much does it cost to send a helium balloon up in the air? can't be that much They'll have got it all back at the end too

Like, $2000. http://www.nearspaceballooning.com/launch-1/ Pittance as far as avertising goes. They're sending it vertically into space, not orbit, orbit is expensive, that needs rockets.

This is as dumb as Mozilla using some guy in a windtunnel to show how awesome Australis is.

Geez, $2k for essentially a balloon I reckon I could do that for way less, helium filled stretchy balloon and stuff I have around the house to film it and locate it when it lands / crashes

Waste of helium.

Indeed. Helium should be rationed for research work since we're almost out and currently have no way to make more until we get fusion reactors worked out.

This is exactly what they did.

Helium is really rather easy to come by, it's a byproduct of nuclear reactors, volcanoes (the earth is nuclear powered, effectively), it's in the atmosphere and we can condense it out quite easily.

Cool need it to MIG/MAG welding.

German beer is probably what caused this idea.....lol

I personally feel they should've invested the money into their driver- and high-end hardware development instead. IF a big money contract with NASA or another spacefaring organization would emerge as consequence of this PR stunt, it will be worth it for AMD. And that may just lead to better products down the stretch.

YOu know that every recent Boeing use AMD GPU's ( embedded processors ) for the advanced display system of the pilots... You will be surprised what we find in some of the Nasa system. http://mil-embedded.com/news-id/?43563
