AMD was "broke" before this CEO took over...

think more freely...they just can't handle more working hours for their employees...they don't need them to be inside their turtle shells... ...demanding in terms of salary...less hours of productivity, they have a controlled disaster approaching anyway...they need less no more... 🙂

Windows 8 should work good on a tablet, I hope they do good...

Seems ever other thread these days is one about people moaning about yet another AMD decision. I personally think it is a bad decision, but maybe they know something we don't. Thing is, while W8 is likely to become quite successful in the desktop market, i just don't see it doing anywhere near as well when it comes to tablets, maybe tablet newcomers who are used to Microsoft might pick something MS based due to the name, but with so many people who have invested time, as well as money in things like apps on the App Store and Google Play, i just don't imagine there being anything but Google/Apple in the future.

As someone else said, AMD doesn't have an ARM license except to use a tiny part of their encryption/secure technology which is mainly for secure computing in the server/enterprise sector. This isn't about AMD failing to go after Android, it simply is being misconstrued that the truth is they aren't currently planning (or announcing) using ARM over x86. They already have low end stuff announced (shown at CEbit) for tablets.
You don't need ARM to run Android. Android, thanks to the Linux kernel, it runs on a plethora of architecture families such as ARM, MIPS, x86 and so on. deltatux

They still need to (help) port the rest of the OS to run natively on x86. There's already one porting project running, but AMD'd still need to direct more efforts than they're able to in order to get things done. Also, all apps coded for ARM would have to be run through Houdini, an emulation layer (by Intel; dunno if they'd let AMD use it for their APUs) to convert from ARM to x86 instructions on the fly, which (theoretically) would slow things down a bit. Otherwise, those apps have to have a separate codebase, at least for its libraries, for x86 for them to run natively.

The x86 family is all about compatibility, if it works on Intel, it'll work on AMD. I've ran Android x86 on AMD CPUs, they run fine. As for apps, most apps are written in Dalvik, Dalvik being a dialect of Java means that as long as the Dalvik VM has been ported to x86, it'll run. No recompilation needed to get the apps to work. Houdini is only needed if the code was written natively in C/C++. deltatux

if they went to into making mobile processors for android. then they could also compete with other phones and devices that have intel processors, nvidia and TI in them how well would a android tablet perform that has a amd quad in it? or a phone? might be killer on the battery though. I saw someone running a p4 through there blueberry....

Yeah I was pretty much saying that.

Google seems to be quite happy systematically destroying any value (With regards OEMS.) their mobile OS has by releasing very high powered, low priced hardware themselves, thus sticking the bird up to everyone else trying to make money on their ecosystem. Whats the point in AMD investing in it?
