i wonder what intel fanboys are going to say this time? AMD won back the best gaming crown. The cpu delivered what it was intended for,gaming.

Wow. Pretty impressive results. AMD just did what it wanted to do. This cpu is just a flexing chip for them to show off phenomenal gaming performance. Job well done . Now give us overclockable 5950x3D

Nice review @Hilbert Hagedoorn. My take away from this is I can get the I5-12600k and get similar performance to the I9-12900k. Especially since the I5 is only $280 on newegg

Definitely better than expected this chip is more of a tech demo for Zen 4 but still an amazing option for anyone not wanting to worry about DDR 5 at the moment.

Thanks HH for not incl useless 720p benches. This definitely king of the gaming chips. Surprised its even pulled ahead considerably in some 1440p benches. But ultimately its the chip one would upgrade to for 1080p gaming.

That's a pretty significant increase in FPS, all from the stacked cache. Shoot even slightly lower clock speeds, which shows in the other benchmarks. I guess its safe to say going forward, AMD can release processors that are more suited for Gaming.

@Hilbert Hagedoorn I know you used a 3090 for game benches but in the Hardware & Software used page it lists a 2080ti as GPU used.

I already know what they're going to say: "The 12900K should run at faster RAM!" even though in most tests, it defeats the 5800X3D by a wide margin. Even the 5800X is a more sensible choice, if gaming isn't your main priority. It hardly makes sense to spend $100+ more on the CPU itself and probably another $100 on faster RAM, for an indiscernible increase in framerate (when we're already talking framerates that, in some cases, are faster than any display can render). Once you get to 4K, the differences hardly matter. You might as well just get a 12400 if you're going to play at 4K and save yourself a huge wad of cash for no noteworthy loss in performance.

IMhO Better overall and future proof (1440p & 4K) is to snag 5900X or 5950X 🙂 Make DDR4 @ 3800-4000MHz and sail like there's no tommorow ....

never going to happen 3D cache is physically over the top of many cores so it isn't OC-able i suggest you wait six months for the R9 7950x which will be OC-able/ or get one of the 2-3 models w/3D cache with R4

Hardware unboxed tested the i9 12900k and ks with fastest ddr5 6400 and the 5800x3d did great. i am super impressed.

AMD ROCKS , and if someone with a ASUS DARK HERO MB , uses ASUS DOCS , 1.3 V and 4650 will work wonders on MT .

That's truly impressive, as I can already have very wet dreams about Zen43D. So AMD old tech good boost and stands tall next to intel highest tech in gaming, that's indeed amazing. If AMD could just do it for the 5950X...

if you're going to play at 4k save even more cash and get a 5600 and some cheap as heck DDR4. Also who is going to pair a 3090 with a low end CPU on either side of the fence? So that reasoning doesn't work when you take into account the "mah Intel R betterz" group.

Agreed, note also the 5800x really has a boost of 4850MHz not 4700, so it is even further away in productivity benchmarks. As you said games get a boost but then that just ends up as a pissing contest between fan boys on forums as in the real world people will not spot the difference. Not sure why people are getting so over excited about this processor at that price when zen 4 is so close.

I think for the most part people are excited for what is to come next fall. This is a big jump in gaming for a year and a half old cpu that was not even the best back then.
