Good way to start off on the Threadripper platform. 😀

Dont' forget you get 4-channel DDR4 and a truckload of additional PCIE lanes for roughly 100$ more. Doesn't sound such a bad deal to me and you can always change into something with a little more byte further down the road 😉

So this is basically 2 R3 (4CPU x 2 CCX (2 CCX are disabled) total 4 CCX) chips glued together?

So is this the AMD version of the Kaby Lake-X from Intel ?

I'm very tempted to get one but I will hold back. Going from a 5820k @4.5GHz on an existing x99 platform would mean I'd have to drop $549 on the CPU, then another $300-$500 on an x399 mobo. It would be an $850-$1050 upgrade to get just 2 more cores at similar single core performance to what I currently have. I could just as well get a 6900k, have the same c/t count and better single core performance.
Regardless of the upgrade thoughts. This is deffinitly the way I'd go if I was building a new system. It's a great price for the spec & platform and 64 PCI-E lanes!!!! 😱

i settled on HH's recommendation of the aorus gaming 7 x399
if in stock today, tomorrow i'll post pics and prelim numbers.

Do we have any idea how much the interconnect latency will affect gaming performance? This chip is in stock and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger.

then again, the intel would most likely not offer anything beyond another single cpu cycle (using same board),
so the amd would definitely make more sense, as you could still get a 12 or 16C later without spending any additional money on the rest of the rig.

I saw it can boost up to 4.2GHz with XFR, + lower latency and higher memory bandwidth and looks great for "budget" 8core cpu.

This is a High End Desk Top cpu. This is not intended for gaming but actual work. So all this back and forth about it not being worth it and doesn't make sense etc is all moot points. The Theadripper series is a great choice for the professional that wants an honest cpu, for an honest day of work for an honest price. The gaming community always puts up backround noise about it not being as good as Intel for gaming. Fine. Buy a gaming Intel cpu and game on. The Threadripper series is there if you need it, most of the ones making the noise don't.
