Very simply put, lots of you guys are waiting and thus delaying the purchase of a new PC until Microsoft Windows 8 debuts.
So we're to blame for AMD's declining profit margin because 'Windows 8' is selling like crap. Microsoft needs to stop trying to keep up with the latest trends and start listening to their customers more. I hope things shape up for AMD. What we really need is another competitor to challenge both AMD and Nvidia.

Maybe, just MAYBE their low sales have something to do with their technology being half a decade behind.

The 7000 series peaked in the 2nd Q, then nvidia released all it's mid-range & 660 ti's in 3rd Q, AMD know how to make GPUs no doubt about it.

I'm talking about CPUs obviously. They could make the greatest GPUs in the multiverse and it won't matter since they're aiming to rival Adobe when it comes to program instability.

They know how to make CPUs too. It's not like they are #79. You don't lose what... almost 2/3 of the company in 6 months for being 2nd best IN THE WORLD

If they give up competing with intel, Haswell will never be released. But sure, i wouldn't get one . :P *sry AMD, the hell is the gigabyte windforce GHz edition?

Intel is competing with ARM now. The pace of improvements will continue, now even more focused on the power front, Haswell being the first step (<10w parts).

Haha this totally!

I wish Nvidia were more focused on 'Power fronts' - rather than 'profit margin fronts', if i don't get a bios update for my GPU then i may need another one, another £400 odd to Nvidia right there, i've given them around £2,000 or whatever and what do they give us, GPU boost and no volt adjustment. Nvidia, in these days of the internets your marketing really needs to step up, give us back our OCing. :P

Enthusiast GPU's don't make you lots of money, period. Back in 2009, when the PC was still doing well as a platform (and wasn't eclipsed by Ultrabooks and Tablets), Nvidia's entire revenue for 3Q 2009 was $898 million, this also includes their supply of several tens of thousands of Tesla units to a Supercomputer and their Tesla division, their licensing deals; in comparison Intel's 3Q 2009 was $9.4 Billion. Now, when you have Intel with a more than competent IGP for 99% of regular computer users tasks and AMD trying to get their IGP moving, the discrete GPU market has dried up even further. Windows 8 is going to continue that drive into the ground at an increased pace.

People are looking for complicated reasons to why this is happening, but I think the answer is much simpler. Many people worldwide just don’t have the money they had a few years back, it didn’t help that they decided to launch the 7k cards at Nvidia style prices, which is fine for Nvidia as their customers have a certain price in mind, but for those who use AMD due to better value it must have been a massive turn off. Not sure if the 7k series cost them a lot, or they were just trying to calm down their debt, but it certainly didn’t do them any favours. iPad’s and other tablets will also be hurting them substantially, many home (non work) users are moving away from laptops and will get a tablet instead as its more compact, easier to use and tends to have a much better screen. Windows 8 might help things for AMD, but I’m not convinced Windows is going to make substantial a dent in the sales of IOS or Android products.

Pc market is in a slump anyway, not unexpected. I hope they branch out more or infuse young blood in to their management at the very least. Nvidia did well to expand into the SoC/mobile category.

I bet the next gen of consoles will see both Nvidia and AMD improve in both CPU and GPU sales, it's just a matter of AMD really out-doing Nvidia in both price and performance. As for the everyday user, I'm really not sure. I recently put together an HTPC for my dad w/ one of AMD's CPUs that have the GPU built into them. Nifty little thing.

The problem is that AMD completely miscalculated the market, they have no CPU architecture ready to meet the Windows 8 demand. On the low end (Smartphones, low end tablets): Intel: Clover Trail - High performance dual core Atom SOC AMD: Z-60 - Poorer performance and uses up much more battery life (with most people saying at least 2X if not more). Medium end (Win 8 tablets and ultrabooks): Intel: Clover Trail, Ivy Bridge and Haswell AMD: Trinity - Which still uses up too much power for those applications High End (Laptops and desktops): Intel: Ivy Bridge and Haswell AMD: Trinity, Piledriver and Steamroller And we all know the current state of the market there.

Windows 8 has nothing at all to do with it. It isn't even out. Windows 8 has no effect on AMD's Q3 earnings.

It does. People wait getting a computer in hopes of buying one of the new one's that come with Windows 8 installed on it already.

You're right, I was too blanket in my response to Mike.

You're still wrong. AMD is not a "customer" of Microsoft and Microsoft has no obligations to it or to its quarterly earnings. Windows 8 has been on a release schedule that has been published for months, this loss of earnings comes as no surprise.

Well I was half wrong then. :P
