As long as they get their sticker on the boxes eventually... nothing worse for AMD than such an announcement, and the boxes of the screens still only saying "Gsync-Compatible"...

They had to do that, FreeSync was being swallowed up by G-Sync after Nvidia opened it. Many brands have begun switching to G-Sync Compatible in their product announcements. If AMD didn't take action with a more serious certification, the FreeSync name would gradually be tied to lower quality monitors only. And that is obviously not at all beneficial for AMD.
On actual range nearly everyone offer both Gsync and Freesync... But both are nearly dead except for some fanatic.

woot? Freesync is pretty alive afaik. Gsync had to make the g-sync compatible move, but i think both are worth it when you compare a non adaptive-sync monitor and an adaptive-sync one.

I don't see how this is beneficial without having set freesync range. And if I still need to search for freesync range, I can also find whether it has LFC or not. Plus personally for me, having naming scheme with numbers was a lot more obvious than adding some "premium" or "pro" or whatever pimp suffix they have.

I see this partially as AMD's not-entirely-competent response to Nvidia's "G-Sync compatible" branding essentially wiping-out any mention of FreeSync on many monitors that were previously being sold as such, or at least regulating FreeSync to the "fine print" portion of the product description.
That's not really the case with every FreeSync monitor. I just got my G2590FX and the "AMD FreeSync" logo is all over the packaging. There isn't even any mention of the monitor being "G-Sync Compatible" at all.....even though it is.
