Why would they bother with dual 79x0 if 89x0 is around the corner ^^

I hope we'll get DX12 with Volcanic Islands and Maxwell I don't think I would've guessed that Oland refers to Γ–land πŸ˜€ I'm already hyped for Pirates Islands:pirate:

I can't see DX12 coming around anytime soon. Dx11 is hardly implemented as it is.

Exactly, that's why I don't think it will happen...

Aye πŸ™‚, I can't wait for this 2nd round! Imo its that real next-gen we've been waiting for (40nm >> 28nm)., not these current 28nm midget "high-end" gpus πŸ˜€

It won't be, they cancelled it months ago. πŸ™‚

Tahiti is the most high-end GPU from AMD since R600. By all standards. So how can that be midget high-end gpu?

Its still a really little chips on size ( 364mm2 ) ... but specification beat effectively all what have been done before ( including nvidia computing cards ) .. 4Tflops, 1.0Tflops DP... 4314M of transistors.. without speaking about all the GPGPU addition ( i will not enumerate the list. ) Just some example when DP and computing performance are put at work.. Look the performance increase between 6970 and 7970 .. In most case, the average increase is around 200-240%. http://imageshack.us/a/img96/7422/0103luxmark.png http://imageshack.us/a/img703/6549/0104postfx.png http://imageshack.us/a/img88/2377/0204juliarendering.png http://imageshack.us/a/img818/4451/0208imagesurfacesmoothi.png

Really little chip... but compared to what? It's their second biggest. 1st one being R600 disaster. I don't think they would want to play 400mm2 game vs Nvidia. And having in mind who's the current CEO, I doubt that will happen.

You are right. The 6970 was larger in size ( the core should have been made on 32nm first anyway ) . .. i dont think they plan do 500mm chips, but in the 400mm range this is quite possible..

Did I say 400mm2 game? I meant 400+ Because I agree, 400-ish is quite possible. I always shook my head when hearing "NV large monolithic die" whining. LARGE is the only way of having more transistors ie getting better performance. Now imagine lean and mean 400mm2 GPU from AMD. I am pretty sure that would be a better sell than all-around performer like Tahiti.

Here's hoping I can make it until Cap'n Jack arrives to shiver me timber, arrrgh! πŸ˜›irate:

Making the new GPU's bigger isn't exactly going to help them with something like a 8990, is that one of the main reasons the 7990 never appeared. Still, looking forward to these arriving, hopefully in December/January as that is the usual date for new AMD hardware.

Other being that dualie is not all that important. And unlike dualie, high-end is important. High-end being unimportant and niche is a myth. Pro is even smaller niche, but because of high margins is crucial for NV. Die size... Even when having a right arch. design, figuring out an optimal implementation/die size is crucial and far from trivial. For example R700 would have been an absolute killer success if it had been just a tad bigger. NV would be left with nothing (except PhysX/GPGPU).

December and January is a BIG difference. Almost as big as the blunder of launching in December and being available in January. Lets see if folks in AMD have figured it out by now πŸ™‚

I'm holding out for the sweet and tangy Thousand Island gpus.

I was speaking for both current AMD/NV "high-end" gpus. And when i said midget i wasn't speaking of die size, but its performance compared to last gen. Both NV GK110 and AMD 8900 are those true high-end gpus worth this title, not 680gtx and 7970, but that's just my point of view and I still stick with it. πŸ€“
