We received the DK2 at our office about a month ago now.. Honestly can't say that I'm that impressed with it.. its cool and all, but riddled with problems.. severe lag in most of what I tried it with.. a pain to get all setup with its driver and tracker. I realize its a dev kit, but I expected it to be a bit better personally.
tbh DK1 was easier to use than DK2 due to the fact you just need to clone the screen and set rift as primary. It'll get better when everything is using direct to rift and they sort out the judder issues e.g. with Grid Autosport you just launch it and away you go( albeit menus arent in VR and you need low settings for direct to rift compared to extended ). Anyway as you said, its still a dev kit, but hopefully useability will be improved for DK2 in the coming months.

Yeah, I mean you can definitely see the direct to rift being awesome in theory but as it stands getting the thing working took me forever. Like literally the first day I think I fiddled with it for 8+ hours to make it work. There was so many undocumented things. For example, if you use teamviewer the "blackout" driver installs a generic teamview driver for displays in order to power them off. Well you can't have that installed on any displays with the Oculus on. But that's not (well wasn't) stated anywhere, on any forum or anything. It was by sheer dumb luck that I removed it and was able to recreate the bug an report it to them. I ran into a bunch of problems like that, incompatible software, driver issues, tracker issues, I probably reinstalled the firmware 20+ times on the thing. Once you get it working though it's awesome. I mean obviously quality/fov can improve, you do get a screen door effect from pixels, but the feeling of looking around is just awesome. Elite Dangerous really shows the kind of UI concepts they can come up with too for it. Looking around the cockpit and the various displays light up and provide information and stuff. So cool.

At least I'm not the only one lol I spent so much time getting it to work also. And yeah the screen-door effect, honestly to me, is the worst part of it. Its very distracting to me and is a huge dent in an otherwise (what can be) very immersive experience. ED was one of the first things I tried, and in that it is very cool to use. Still tough to get around how pixelated everything is, but yeah.. definitely neat.

they need to release an update to the SDK, both 0.4.1 and 0.4.2 have plagued me with bsods, it's something to do with riftenabler.sys and sli and crossfire setups, still it is early days for the DK2 and it is still for me the most immersive experience when it comes to gaming, people who never tried it don't realize how effective this tech is.

DK1 was far easier to setup. I loved the simplicity of the dual screen setup. DK2 seems to be trying some smart stuff, maybe a little too smart. Bypassing the graphics driver and api....I'm not so sure. These layers are here for compatibility. In any case, I have a number of games (not demo's) which play just fine on the dk2, and have really reinforced the fact that VR is the future. At the moment I'm playing Alien Isolation and Grid Autosport. Both are "beta" implementations of DK2 support but the result is fantastic.

Personally after using Oculus and also looking at the Vrvana Totem, its clear that Oculus will not be in the drivers seat for long. Other startups are doing some interesting things over and above what Oculus VR is, so for them, they do not have the luxury of time anymore, imo.

That totem device looks pretty slick. I have a friend who would probably kill for the fact that you can adjust the focus separately on each lens to account for his vision issue (I'm not sure what it is but it has to do with different eye focuses and I believe he can't see 3D movies in the cinema properly). I like that they have done the work in supporting several of the main game engines in use today as well. But time and again I have seen the superior product lose out just because of press or industry momentum. It seems official release date for the Totem is one year from now. It's clear we've now reached Steam Engine time - who knows who will be successful? Hopefully a number of them as I would hate to see a de facto monopoly on this.

I can't even play the game more than an hour without Oculus, so i won't even imagine how it'll be with it. The game is scary 😀

Anyone know why I'm getting 2 identical screens, one per eye on the DK2? So basically what you would see if watching someone on a monitor, playing the Rift, is what Im seeing in the Rift, two squashed images like you would see on the monitor instead of them combining to make a 3D image Only happens in certain games, and AI is one of them, Ive added the hack to engine xml, paused the oculus service, enabled extended mode, and movement works, but two images instead of one

Revert back to the older nvidia driver, the latest WHQL broke the SBS rendering and you end up having 4 instead of 2

Good idea but it will never be mainstream & will flop in time as have all other attempts at VR have in gaming.

It's been happening with the beta's and previous too

Yes it happens with the betas for the whql but not the previous driver. I had this issue myself a few days ago and reverted back and its fine again in elite and alien isolation.

Don't worry about it, I`ll give a few a shot 🙂 Thanks

Personally no games but I do use real vr equipment in work for drilling wells before they are actually drilled, but as far as gaming goes lots of companies have tried over the years to make a gaming version of vr & all have failed. Don't get me wrong here Oculus Rift DK2 is a nice piece of kit but its not & will never be mainstream therefore it wont make money as hardly anybody will buy it so it will disappear in time. They will have to sell millions of headsets for it to be mainstream but this wont happen.

Well if you get a chance you should give it a try. Lots of gaming companies tried VR in the past but the tech just wasnt there, mobile technology has reduced the components significantly and reduced the cost of accelerometers, magnetometers and screens. Plus consumer grade gfx cards are now at a level where you can render VR stereoscopic views at smooth framerates. Its a convergence of technologies thats allowing it to happen. As for it being mainstream, thats a ways off in the same vein of gaming on phones not being mainstream until the iphone came along. Its intended for gaming and the DK2 is currently at acceptable levels for that and extremely immersive, all it needs is a higher resolution screen for it to be absolutely perfect for cockpit games and that will happen in the next year or so. Until the problem of interacting with your hands in an environment is resolved it will remain for the moment better suited to cockpits, plus theres tonnes of other issues like haptic feedback, walking etc. It'll get there eventually, for the likes of oldies, kids etc. to be using it regularly it will need to be the size of sunglasses and have AR, thats not going to happen for a long time, personally i couldnt care about that as im happy even if its mostly used in cockpit games. I can see it selling millions in a few years but it needs AAA games and more professional experiences.
