ThermalTake Level 10 case ships in October at $690

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Honestly I never expected this chassis to see the daylight.

Earlier this year ThermalTake was showing off the Level 10 case on several exhibitions, a chassis that was designed in cooperation with BMW Group DesignWorksUSA. So far, it has only been shown at CeBIT and Computex, but today the company announced the Level 10 Extreme Gaming Station is ready to enter mass production.

The futuristic case will be available in retail stores in October for an astounding $690.

PR: What makes the Level 10 unique is its compartmentalized design, many of the components are mounted in chambers that rotate outward on hinges.  Earlier this year the Level 10 won the prestigious IDEA

AMD shows 48-core Magny Cours System

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Earlier on we already reported about AMDs 'Magny-Cours' 12-core processors.

The company's upcoming 12-core server chips, code-named Magny-Cours, put two six-core chips in one package. The same silicon is used in its six-core chips, code-named Istanbul, which are part of the Opteron line of server processors.

However at the Hot Chips conference at Standford University they have been showing off some real candy, pop four of these processors on a 4 socket motheboard slash server, and then demonstrate 48 physcial CPU cores.

The socket itself gets a revamp from the existing 1,207-pin Socket-F, to the 1,974-pin Socket G34. The high pin-count ensures connections to HyperTransport links, four DDR3 memory connections, and other low-level IO.

Tsssk, such show-offs, look at that.

Asus ROG Mars video card hits America and EU

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Asus announced today that its limited edition multiple GPU video card called the ROG Mars is coming to America as well. The card was first seen by Guru3D at Computex 2009 and will be sold in limited numbers (1000 pieces) on a first come, first served basis. The card is based on the NVIDIA GTX 295 reference design and has a pair of GTX 285 GPUs crammed into the single, dual slot video card.

Asus claims that the Mars is 23% more powerful than conventional GTX 295 video cards and has an improved thermal design that adds 65% more heat pipe coverage. That additional heat pipe coverage equates to 20% better cooling. The card has 4GB of GDDR3 RAM and the core clock is 648Mhz, shader clock is 1476MHz, and the memory clock is 2.304 GHz. Only 1,000 of the limited edition cards will be made. Reports claim the cards will sell for about $1,000~$1200 each with similar prices in EUR.

Our honest advise .. dude just get a GTX 295.

GPGPU performance to increase by 570x over next six years

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageNVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang reportedly made a stunning claim regarding the performance of GPGPU computing at the Hot Chips conference in Palo Alto.

According to numerous sources, Huang predicted GPU compute performance is likely to increase its current capabilities by 570x over the next six years, while CPU performance will progress by just 3x.

According to Huang, GPU compute is likely to increase its current capabilities by 570x, while 'pure' CPU performance will progress by a limited 3x.

Huang - who made his comments at the Hot Chips symposium in Stanford University - explained that such advances could enable the development of realtime universal language translation devices and advanced forms of augmented reality.

Huang also discussed a number of "real-world" GPU applications, including energy exploration, interactive ray tracing and CGI simulations [tg-daily].

Microsoft goofs bigtime with photoshopped image

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Microsoft landed in a bit of rough water and reputation damage, it appears Microsoft has photo-shopped an image on the Polish version of its Business Productivity site.

If you visit the US business site you will see the image below (top) and if you visit the Polish site you'll see the same picture (bottom) but the man in the middle is no longer black. To top it off, the forgot to Photoshop the man's hand.

Why has Microsoft done this? Well, that's too obvious really .. Poland definitely is somewhat more conservative and they adapted their strategy to it.

Microsoft has said on Twitter that it is in the process of taking down the image, calling it a 'marketing site photo mistake.'

Come on Microsoft .. it's 2009, not the middle ages. Check out the thumbnail.

AMD: our 12-core server-chips use as much power current 6-core

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

An interesting read on computerworld states that AMD's 12-core server ship might be released as early as next year already. The twelve cores will have reduced clock speeds but will not draw more power than the current 6-core versions.

Even though the clock frequencies will fall, Magny-Cours chips will pack more performance compared to existing Opteron chips, Conway said. The larger cache and increased cores will make servers faster, Conway said.

The company's upcoming 12-core server chips, code-named Magny-Cours, put two six-core chips in one package. The same silicon is used in its six-core chips, code-named Istanbul, which are part of the Opteron line of server processors.

The chips are aimed at servers and are due out in the first quarter of 2010.

Conway also talked about finer details in the Magny-Cours chip. Two six-core chips are connected by four hyperthreaded interconnects and are targeted at two- and four-socket servers, Conway said. It includes a total of 12MB of L3 cache, with each core supporting 512KB of L2 cache. The chips will be manufactured by AMD's spinoff, GlobalFoundries, using existing 45-nanometer technology.

AMD is also working on a new x86 chip architecture code-named Bulldozer. The architecture will be used in chips manufactured using the 32-nm process in 2011. The company has scheduled a 16-core chip code-named Interlagos for release in 2011 [via computerworld].

BTW - small pun from my side: Magny Cours = Many Cores ;)
