Monitor manufacturer Dough and TFT Central recently held an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, shedding light on exciting advancements in OLED displays. The session covered various OLED technologies and their plans for the upcoming years.

Following the AMA, TFT Central shared a video showcasing the updated 2024 OLED roadmap. Notable findings include the potential release of the first OLED monitors with new panels in 2024, featuring 360 Hertz panels from Samsung using QD OLED technology. The report also hinted at a potential showdown between LG's W-OLED and Samsung's QD-OLED in 2024, with both manufacturers slated to release directly competing displays in the same quarter.

The roadmap reveals the following formats and manufacturers:

format/manufacturerSamsungLG
16:9 – 27″ WQHD 360Hz (Q3/24)
– 31.5″ UHD 240Hz (Q3/24)
– 27″ WQHD 480Hz (Q1/25+)
– 31.5″ UHD 240Hz (Q3/24)
– 42″ UHD 240Hz (Q1/25+)
21:9 – 34″ UWQHD 240Hz (Q2/24) – 34″ UWQHD 240Hz (Q2/24)
– 39″ UWQHD 240Hz (Q2/24)

Interest in these new OLED technologies is growing, primarily due to their perfect blacks and low response times, making them an ideal choice for gaming. However, concerns exist regarding the longevity of these panels, related to potential burn-in issues and lower full-screen brightness compared to LCD panels. Samsung and LG are expected to present their new panels, three from each manufacturer, in 2024. Additionally, the first UHD OLED monitors are scheduled for release in 2024, with a 480 Hertz panel featuring W-OLED technology becoming available in 2025. In the third quarter of 2024, Samsung's 360 Hertz panels will compete against LG's current 240 Hertz panels in the 27-inch segment, while LG aims to counter with 34-inch QD OLED panels in the second quarter. LG also plans to expand into the 39-inch class next year. Both manufacturers will also duel in the third quarter with 31.5-inch UHD panels (16:9), each offering 240 Hertz. The first presentations of these monitors are expected to take place at CES in January, although the data in the roadmap are preliminary and subject to change.

Differences between OLED monitor technologies were also highlighted:

W-OLED (White OLED) from LG Display:

  • Pros: Cost-effective, consistent brightness, potentially longer lifespan
  • Disadvantages: Color distortions, lower color gamut

QD OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) from Samsung Display:

  • Pros: Improved brightness and wide color gamut
  • Disadvantages: Problems with text display, higher costs

RGB OLED (Red-Green-Blue OLED) from JOLED:

  • Pros: Better color accuracy, better text rendering
  • Cons: Shorter lifespan, higher cost

These developments promise to shape the future of OLED displays and further enhance the gaming experience for user
