Seagate USA, announced the development of the Mozaic 3+ Platform, a thermal assist technology, on January 17, 2024. This platform, leveraging Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR), is designed to enable hard disk drives (HDDs) with capacities exceeding 30TB. The Mozaic 3+ Platform incorporates a platinum alloy media with a lattice structure and a plasmonic writer for reliable data writing.

Additionally, it features the 7th generation spintronic reader, the industry's most sensitive magnetic field sensor, and a 12nm integrated controller that enhances performance by up to three times. These advancements allow for more than 3TB of data per platter and total HDD capacities of over 30TB. The Mozaic 3+ Platform is projected to increase the capacity per platter from 4TB to more than 5TB in the coming years. This expansion will significantly enhance the capacity per footprint, offering a substantial improvement over the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) HDDs currently prevalent in large data centers. Such advancements are expected to reduce both acquisition and operational costs.

Seagate plans to begin shipping HDDs over 30TB capacity as part of the Exos series for data centers, utilizing the Mozaic 3+ Platform, starting from the first quarter of 2024.
