Against all odds, and probably against NVIDIA's wishes. MAXSUN, an NVIDIA board partner focusing on China's domestic market, has recently introduced a custom GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER graphics card design. Diverging from the standard, this design incorporates dual regular 8-pin PCIe power connectors, as opposed to the more commonly used 12VHPWR power connector.

Custom designs of RTX 4070 cards typically feature a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, suitable for their 200 W Total Graphics Power (TGP). However, for the RTX 4070 SUPER, NVIDIA has increased the TGP to 220 W. This enhancement generally requires board partners to adopt the 12VHPWR connector, recognized for its capacity to deliver up to 300 W of continuous power output. NVIDIA also facilitates this transition by providing an adapter that converts two 8-pin PCIe connectors into a 12VHPWR connector.

In contrast, MAXSUN's design uniquely employs a native 8-pin PCB configuration, thereby obviating the need for an adapter. This decision is reflective of a market preference in China for compatibility. Utilizing 8-pin PCIe connectors provides advantages in terms of case compatibility, as they allow for more flexible cable management with tighter bends, compared to the larger 12VHPWR connector, even when using NVIDIA's adapter.
