MaxLinear has unveiled its Puma 8, an ESD/FDD DOCSIS 4.0 cable modem and gateway platform that achieves data throughput speeds exceeding 10 Gbps, establishing itself as an Ultra DOCSIS 3.1 solution. This technological advancement presents Multi Service Operators (MSOs) with an efficient DOCSIS upgrade option, minimizing capital expenditure while delivering 10 Gbps cable service, comparable to PON fiber, without necessitating a complete DOCSIS 4.0 infrastructure overhaul. For service providers seeking an immediate transition to DOCSIS 4.0, Puma 8 can be paired with MaxLinear's single-chip, low-power DOCSIS 4.0 Ultra High Split (UHS) Upstream Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA). This combination achieves impressive upstream speeds, reaching up to 7 Gbps through 6x OFDMA channels in the 108 MHz to 684 MHz band and 1x OFDMA channel within the legacy 5 MHz to 85 MHz band.

Designed to cater to the demands of next-generation applications, such as gaming, digital health, and 8k streaming, the Puma 8 single-chip DOCSIS 4.0 solution addresses the challenges faced by MSOs in determining the optimal timing and approach for upgrading broadband services. While balancing customer expectations for enhanced service reliability and speed with revenue growth and operational efficiency, Puma 8 offers a cost-effective pathway to a seamless upgrade to Ultra DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 4.0. As more expensive PON technologies become the norm for certain networks, Puma 8 empowers MSOs to strategically scale their cable-based data services relative to PON-based alternatives.

Will Torgerson, VP/GM Broadband Group, highlighted the significance of MaxLinear's Puma 8 platform in the realm of DOCSIS 4.0 technology, emphasizing its exceptional performance and energy efficiency, capable of delivering data speeds exceeding 10 Gbps, rivalling fiber-optic connections. This positions MSO partners to offer ultra-fast broadband with prudent capital expenditure, elevating the home connectivity experience for consumers both today and in the future.

Puma 8 offers substantial cost advantages for MSOs, enabling them to promptly provide customers with 10 Gbps service via an Ultra DOCSIS 3.1 solution, with a cost-efficient pathway to future DOCSIS 4.0 adoption. By integrating Puma 8 as an incremental upgrade within their existing traditional Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) networks, operators can significantly enhance network data-speed performance without the substantial costs associated with extensive infrastructure overhauls required for full-duplex DOCSIS 4.0. This financially prudent approach empowers MSOs to leverage advanced DOCSIS 4.0 technology while maintaining control over capital expenditure, offering flexibility in navigating the dynamic landscape of high-speed broadband data services.

Ultra-High Split Upstream PGA In addition to its cost-effectiveness, the Puma 8 platform prioritizes performance. MaxLinear's single-chip, low-power DOCSIS 4.0 Ultra High Split (UHS) Upstream Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA) was purpose-built to seamlessly interface with Puma 8, offering an integrated end-to-end solution. Its low-power design, with minimal external components, contributes to energy efficiency, compact board design, and reduced operational costs for both OEMs and operators.

The DOCSIS 4.0 UHS PGA's ultra-high split upstream capability proves instrumental in optimizing network performance. It facilitates more efficient allocation of upstream frequency spectrum, enhancing upstream data capacity, leading to improved network responsiveness, reduced latency, and an overall enhanced user experience—a critical aspect in meeting the escalating demand for high-speed, low-latency connectivity.

Furthermore, the PGA's frequency tunable bandwidth offers flexibility for network operators to adapt and optimize performance according to specific network bandwidth requirements. This adaptability ensures scalability and future-proofing, enabling operators to expand network capacity in alignment with technological advancements without necessitating extensive modem or gateway replacements.

MaxLinear's pioneering Puma 8-based DOCSIS 4.0 modem and gateway platforms, along with the ultra-high split PGA, form the core of MaxLinear's optimized DOCSIS 4.0 broadband home access and connectivity ecosystem.
