AMD unveiled its Ryzen 8000 series of embedded processors on April 2, 2024, marking the introduction of the company's first embedded processors to incorporate the AMD XDNA architecture Neural Processing Unit (NPU). These processors are tailored for industrial AI applications, providing specialized optimization for these demanding workloads. The Ryzen 8000 series processors are manufactured using a 4nm process and feature AMD's Zen 4 CPU architecture, RDNA 3 architecture GPU, and XDNA architecture NPU. The series boasts AI computational capabilities of up to 39 TOPS, with the NPU alone contributing 16 TOPS. Key technical specifications include 20 PCIe Gen 4 lanes, support for dual-channel DDR5 5600 memory with ECC error correction, and the capability to drive four independent 4K displays. The processors also support a range of popular video codecs, including AV1, H.264, and H.265.

The lineup of the Ryzen 8000 series embedded processors consists of four models, each varying in core count, thread count, base and turbo frequencies, and thermal design power (TDP):

  • AMD Ryzen Embedded 8845HS: 8 cores, 16 threads, base frequency of 3.8 GHz, turbo frequency of 5.1 GHz, and a TDP range of 35-54W.
  • AMD Ryzen Embedded 8840U: 8 cores, 16 threads, base frequency of 3.3 GHz, turbo frequency of 5.1 GHz, and a TDP range of 15-30W.
  • AMD Ryzen Embedded 8645HS: 6 cores, 12 threads, base frequency of 4.3 GHz, turbo frequency of 5 GHz, and a TDP range of 35-54W.
  • AMD Ryzen Embedded 8640U: 6 cores, 12 threads, base frequency of 3.5 GHz, turbo frequency of 4.9 GHz, and a TDP range of 15-30W.

It is important to note that there were initial inaccuracies in the reported frequencies for the Ryzen Embedded 8645HS and 8640U processors, which have since been corrected.

AMD is collaborating with embedded Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) partners, including Advantech, ASRock, and iBASE, to establish an ecosystem around the Ryzen 8000 series embedded processors, aiming to enhance the integration and utilization of these advanced processing units in industrial and AI-driven applications.
