Power Consumption and conclusion
Power consumption
Three 10GigE compliant PCs were connected directly to the switch. In addition, a 1G connection to the internet was built. We pushed the three PCs to 2.5 GigE and the WLAN uplink to 600 Gbps (internet). As you can see, the power consumption is give or take 10 Watts. By adding 10G links, you can only increase one or two watts per port.
Green and orange LED indicators
Perhaps a little odd, normalized is a purple led for Multi GigE, this one is green for 10G and orange for anything slower. No biggy of course.
Conclusion
In order to shift to 2.5, 5, and 10G ethernet, we need quicker and less expensive switches. This is a really proper starting step, albeit 55 dollars per port is still pricey when compared to a consumer-grade 1 Gigabit switch. We've seen the switch as tested sell for around 275 USD/EUR, or about 55 dollars per port. Pricey, but these are figures that have a rightful space in the consumer level domain. Those that require additional features, such as remote management, will most likely have to look elsewhere. What it may come down to is adaptability. The Trendnet unit performed admirably in our local network. Unmanaged; you can plug it in and forget about the rest, starting with any sort of CAT5E or better cable. BTW in our testing with 10 meter LAN cables, CAT5E was working properly for 10G connections. The TEG-S750 delivered good results. It worked as advertised in our ad-hoc LAN-equipped lab, and despite the review unit's odd location of the power plug, there is little to complain about. Needless to say, once installed, it quickly became an essential component of the home network. A HUGE plus is that this switch is cooled passively, yet didn't run very warm. So acoustics wise it's silent. Of course, you also don't need to fiddle with Fiber transposers, this is an easy to plug-in RJ-45 based product. Also, TRENDnet offers a lifetime warranty on the product. This is a very good offer if you like full-throttle performance in your LAN infrastructure.
