 Performance - Quake III Arena

imageview.php?image=105Quake III Arena, what a revolution this game was when it got released. Now it has become a standard by itself as a solid and respectable benchmark utility for journalists... The game that everybody knows is naturally Quake III Arena. Seriously, who doesn't own it or at least has played it once!? Q3A is of course an excellent game to use as a benchmark. It's getting a bit old but you find many games out there using the Q3 engine (RTCW, Call of Duty).

We tested the videocard with Quake III Arena in High Quality mode, 32 Bit color. Available resolutions we tested were 800x600 up to 1600x1200 with quality settings set to maximum.

Of course there are far better benchmarks than Quake III, yet this benchmark always places a graphics card in the right perspective performance wise. Yes, we do not need 200 frames per second. But this benchmark scales the difference in graphics cards nicely. More modern and GPU demanding games would of course produce much lower results.

Yes yes, Quake III Arena and it's ancient!, yet what do you see when you visit a LAN party? Yup! It's fun and still played a LOT. In the past you've seen scores over 300-400 FPS. Yet this again is our own recorded timedemo and it is extremely heavy on the gaming-rig. This timedemo shows off graphics cards a bit better from a performance point of view. Again and of course, we stumble into a CPU limitation.

BTW i need to fix the chart as the one above states 4xAA 8xAF, that's the other way around. The results are good the text 4xAA 8xAF should be in the chart below ;)

Well, you don't hear me complaining.
