Microshaft will likely have to PAY users to switch..

Seems we have a lot of old people here who can't adapt to anything no matter what. Back in our topic. MS took the right decision. This will be day 1 upgrade for me. I liked W7 and now I'm using 8.1. MS made some other cool announcements too.

Free is the only reason one may try the OS otherwise it is nothing spectacular. iOS and Android do pretty much everything better.

I wonder if this works on pirated versions.

Uh? If you're talking about for phones, sure, tablets and PC, no.

I think Windows is worth a $20 a year subscription. Even the Pro verison for personal use.

Adaptation is not the problem.. Why would anyone want to adapt to a clusterf*ck of an OS, its not intuitive at all. The average person has a hard time using windows 8, at least with apple things just work, any grandmother can use their stuff. I tested a few people at work with 8 release and told them to shut it down, none of them could figure it out. Glad well get another start8 for windows 10

Maybe The biggest problem with switching operating systems is programs and drivers don' t have all the bugs out yet. Offering a free upgrade for a year is a good incentive to switch. However if you had to reformat after a year, than you would be forced to buy it or downgrade. So they wouldn't be losing much either. I believe this will help improve the final system faster by giving more people an incentive to try it and send the info back to Microsoft. Whether I do it or not... I may try it on one of my PC's just for fun. I do love a good upgrade when it works correctly.

Given that I'd bet DX12 is going to be windows 10 exclusive, this seems like a no Brainer to me.

No, you won't. You will eventually see the difference in performance, especially in games, and you will upgrade whether you like it or not.. Then after some time, you will get used to Windows 10, realize that its the best OS they've released since Windows 7, and continue to live your life. On point, this is smart for Microsoft to do honestly.. which is odd to say since they've been making such braindead decisions for so long now.. I will definitely upgrade over to windows 10.. even if just for the boost in gaming performance which is very sharp indeed. So far, using the developer preview for the past few months, 10 has great potential.

Not being able to power down is a joke. They just were never aware that ALT-F4 was a way to ever power windows down.

I have over 30+ users on Windows 8.1 at work and no issues. So yeah.

Depends on the work.. I have a mix of mac and windows and all my windows users aside from maybe one or two are on Windows 7. My team here would have ZERO patience for navigating windows 8 and I'm sure they'd get tired of it fast, but also I just don't need to worry about our designer applications working on it. I will be doing plenty of testing before I perform any upgrades from Win7 > Win10 for users in my office to make sure it doesn't break everything. I have high hopes for 10 honestly.. but I also have been loosely following its development and testing it.

Well at least there is a year to upgrade. I will give it a few months and wait and see how it looks before finally upgrading. I hope the ultimate versions of the OS will be free, but that will probably not happen. I can see the home premium being free though which is enough I guess.

Why would you stay with a outdated O/S ? when the upgrade will be free for you , so i guess there will be no direct x 10 for you then. Personal i loved using windows 8.1 and couldn't imagine going back to 7 ,anyway i welcome the new O/S with open arms and looking very forwards to Direct x 10 I have never had any problems with 8.1 On my desktop or my windows tablet.

DX10 has been out for years now, DX12 will be coming with windows 10. And windows 8 and 8.1 works fantastic on a tablet or a laptop with a touchscreen. For mouse and keyboard it can be a pain sometimes.

This is why you get 8.1, not 8. 8 was indeed ridiculously counter-intuitive. Nonetheless, I got used to it in under 2 weeks.

You were able to power down, the button was on the right-side ribbon in settings. But it was very counter-intuitive.
