when wd started this (see the picture) to its usb 2,5 external drives,it stopped existing for me. wd can split into 10 companies for all i care. Not respecting your customers and tech community pays back !

wd from a certain point started releasing external usb 2,5 " drives with the usb connector embeded in one pcb. if the usb is damaged you cannot just replace the case and still use the drive.

Ooooooh, I see, was wondering what the heck is that on the edge, and where's the SATA port. Yeah, well, definitely not a drive to buy for sure. Actually, 2.5" HDD is dead to me overall, it makes no sense, too expensive for too little capacity. If I want a laptop drive, 2TB SATA SSDs are dirt cheap these days... 3.5" HDD... well, that's a different story, I could build a dog house using them as bricks, that's how many I have ;-)

The SATA connection points are still there, but the task to solder wires to the board is not what average Joe would do or even consider.

Oh wow I was not even aware they did that ....I thought their externals where the standard SATA drives in a tigh outer box and a USB controller like the majority of drives out there!
