So VR is the new 3D then? It's not like VR (along with 3D) has tried to be mainstream before and failed. Still, new tech is new tech and I'll take a looksee although if the "steam machine" was anything to go by I'll take it with a heavy handed pinch of salt.

I would take VR 3D even if just for comfortable watching of movies. I have played more than few games in 3D, And it is very good experience. HL2 was quite fun. But I am pretty sure that 1st company to come with consumer product with 1440p screen at sub $500 gets most of sales. I have played at 1080p line interleaved and while you have only 1/2 of pixels per eye, 3D gave better experience than 2D 1080p. 1440p brings 1.78x pixel count per eye, nearly matching 1080p and that is more than sufficient (considering HW limitations).
