high hopes for this, but i think it'll get lost in the PS4 and Xbone buzz, wont be until sometime after, that I think this box will get the proper attention it needs. As in the product as a whole, not just the feature of exhausting air..

I guess this means no next Half-Life until 2055

Interior pics would be nice. Anything this small suffers from a small PSU or the funky server style PSU's with tiny loud ass fans. For this to work, the PSU would have cables that are preshortened. edit, found a pic http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/11/dsc079771.jpg http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/files/2013/11/SteamGuts.jpg There are no cables in the pic though. I see that they use a pcie extender to flip the GPU downward. Then put the SDD over the mobo since it's small anyway. Then the CPU+RAM heat get's exhausted out the top. The thing is they are using a small PSU, which CANNOT power a Titan, unless they've made some kind of amazing small PSU that I have not heard about.

The HDD doesn't look cooled. A fan near/on it makes the difference between 65C and 25C. At least it has for every HDD I've had up to 4TB.

Its a projector that, looks bloody terrible :P

At least it looks better than the VCR looking Xbone and at least you know the hardware inside that would DESTROY both "next gen" consoles into infinity! πŸ˜‰

I suspect that this is going to become a dust magnet, all that negative pressure built up inside by exhausting all the air to the outside is going to suck up all the dust from any small gaps and crevices, and I don't even see any dust filters on there. fail project is fail, what else can i say?

It's called a prototype for a reason.

I actually like the internal design. As small form factor goes, it's one of the better I've seen. Sure it could be improved upon, but it's still being worked on as far as I can tell. Not that I'll be getting one either way, I'm more than happy enough to have a desktop PC set up in my living room.

That cpu fan must spin at maximum velocity and still cause the thermal limit to be hit πŸ˜€

I don't believe this will catch on as its going to cost way too much and have a small fan base, the ps4/Xbone will be the better choice at 400-500$ and popularity. people that would buy this are better to just build their own pc with steam OS or something.

hummm have to buy a 3-d printer...

interesting, Not sold on the control, is it even a controller? it kind looks like speaker in the shape of a controller only it has no buttons. Has no keys no nothing

The controller works like some kind of touch screen, although I don't remember the details beyond that since I don't intend to get one myself. The hardware and case design do look nice though. πŸ™‚

cause touch screen stuff works so well for gaming. I interested in how well this all pans out, but I wont be buying one. All i see here is PC in box like console. A PC is still a PC no matter how you dress it up. This thing probably cost more then to make a pc my self too

This will sale for many reasons regardless if it's cost 1k-1.5k+ It's Valve after all! Also, hardcore console fans will jump on to this just to differentiate them selves from the xbox/ps kiddies and not just them, I'd imagine people who are considering stepping up to PC gaming also eyeing this Valve Machine it's pre made and it has an appealing size. Some are intimidated by PCs and the technical side like installations. Surely it's going to be cheaper than say the BIG shots like Alien/Origen?! If Valve is ready to give warranty say of at least 5 years and prepares an alternative gaming pad at the release I don't see how this could go wrong. Now if they are really clever they could offer gaming bundles like AMD or some fancy gaming subscriptions. See where I'm going here?! EDIT: It may also depend on Valve's OS and the whole user interface, now if AMD's Mantle lives up to the hype this just might kill the whole concept altogether. Yes I'm contradicting myself but let's see what happens. Me likes it!

I don't see it, not even a small amount. Hardcore console fans will stick with their console of choice, this will be of zero interest to them as it will be too expensive, have no exclusive games and will have a very small amount of games in total compared to even the new consoles. PC gamers will continue to build their own PC's unless this works out cheaper, and it won't be, if anything it will be noticeably more expensive. I don't think Valve are actually making/selling these so will be no warranty, this is just a prototype for other people to go and make and sell.

Wooow a few years ago I wanted to build a low pro build just like this. Nice prototype.
The HDD doesn't look cooled. A fan near/on it makes the difference between 65C and 25C. At least it has for every HDD I've had up to 4TB.
You do realize that is a 2.5" notebook HDD? Have you ever looked inside a laptop? None of them have any sort of air flow over the HDD and they run just fine. Xbox 360 as well, the HDD has no venting. Its in a confined plastic container at the top of the box. Not a problem. Besides, the exhaust from the CPU/mobo seems to flow over it. There is no issue here.

Bottom right of the box, that PSU looks quite large. Not much smaller than a standard ATX power supply. Quite possible to redesign one of those with a larger fan that doesn't run as high RPM ... which they did if you look at the prototype. No wires? they just probably haven't finalized the prototype harness yet or are waiting on a modified power supply. Consoles always have a custom harness for the box ... hell even dell has custom wiring for each case they sell!

No, that is a MicroATX/SFX sized PSU. Max for those is roughly 450-470W. You can tell by the fan diameter in relation to the GPU width. Every Dell I've worked on was a birds next of wires, and I used to fix them for a living. Find me a picture of this harness you speak of from a generic gray box PSU. Dell is too cheap to even spend money on that. They just shove it in there and screw the side panel on.
