This was the first "big deal" game since Quake 2 and drove a lot of Voodoo 2 sales. Ah, the memories of watching the castle flyover demo being used to benchmark!

A pair of 3Dfx Voodoo 2 in SLI and Unreal retail box was the dream present for every PC gamer back in the summer of 1998.

Back then I would feel nausea and headache after playing certain games like Unreal, Wolf3D, Hexen etc. Watching the gameplay video of Unreal even now I don't feel good.

Absolutely loved this game when it first came out, the graphics where mindblowing back then, I remember running towards the waterfall and just starring in awe and this was the first game I played with 3d positional sound as well which really added to immersion, good times 🙂

I have Unreals for ... long time. In this one I had one great surprise. Mirror floor. 1st time walking on it was like: "Glass Floor. Weird, it did not break upon crash."

Ah, the good ol days when games came with dozens of hours of content for one modest price, out of the box.

I played it with a Matrox M3D 3D accelerator card in those days. Good memories.

Had the game and the DLC (Gold includes it) in one form or another ever since the games originally shipped. Such a pity, I thought, to see Epic's path after Unreal Gold--which really was a blockbuster single-player game at the time. In an interview, Sweeney even stated that 80% of games were single-player at the time. But after Unreal Gold Sweeney moved to multiplayer and then eventually moved away from x86 PCs *completely* for several years--I guess in his copying of Carmack's Quake, I suppose. Too bad, too--because Sweeney and company were on to something really, really good in single-player games when the company just up and left the market. All of the original stuff in Unreal got blasted away in Sweeney's mad dash to copy every single thing (it seemed) that Carmack was doing with Quake and it's successors--I mean, great stuff like the characters in Unreal (even the athletes in UT) were trim and fit looking specimens--but presto-chango--Unreal's fit athletes soon gave way to the sort of "fat-slob" athletes favored by id artists...;) Just my lowly opinion of course...;) Ah, what could have been! I also think Cliffy B was responsible for many of the boneheaded moves Epic made after us PC players put Epic on the map with Unreal...Such is life, eh?
