That really is awesome!!!! We may see some great stuff come from this. Personally I have liked alot of games built on unreal engine. I never really had a complaint about unreal 3 until I got eyefinity and unreal has very bad fov issues with triple monitors.

Unity Pro is still cheaper for professionals, $75 a month and that's it. But IMO UE4 is superior in terms of workflow and stuff. Pretty cool that I get $30 back too.

Well, so the AI Tutorials that I watched may actually be useful. Not that I delved that deep, but the thing can get complex.

https://www.unrealengine.com/what-is-unreal-engine-4 Might depend on what kind of revenue you get out of it, 75$ a month for Unity with no other costs or UE4 with no costs at all now for nearly everyone but a 5% royalty fee. (Earlier I think it was 20$ a month with the same percentage royalty fee.) There's CryEngine EaaS as well which is a slightly simpler version of the full deal for 10$ a month and also some fee on royalties I believe. (UE4 is clearly a better deal now without the subscription and you get a lot of other things such as the full source code and access to their very active community and the marketplace.) EDIT: Speaking of Cry-Engine and their "Engine-as-a-Service" (EaaS) program I wonder what they will do now when UE4 from how it looks now offers a much better deal. EDIT: Or maybe I just can't do math at all evidently. :P

There's no royalties for the CryEngine subscription.

But you don't get the source either. I also find CryEngine to be overly complicated but w/e. They all have pluses and minuses.

I'll download it and try to do some scenery with a walking character and no AI.

CryEngine really seems more complicated, the UE4 interface is much better.

Good catch, thank You!

Some of my favorite games of all time were made with UE .. that's good news.

Well that settled it we were thinking what engine to use with friends but... This makes it really easy...

So what about if you made a game that you released as a free to play game? Totally free, no micro transactions whatsoever... do you still have to pay the royalty fee? EDIT:
Epic only takes a 5% cut from the gross revenue beyond the first $3,000, per product, per quarter. The move allows even more developers access to one of the most robust game engines available, and is a step forward from last yearโ€™s $19 per month subscription.

Wow. I'm shocked. I was actually talking to a friend last week saying that I'd give UE4 a go. I'm into 3D modeling as a hobby and I'm a programmer by profession, but I've never actually worked with a game engine. This should be fun.

Dang this physically based rendering is tough stuff, so much to learn. I'm too used the old diffuse/color/spec/normal and then cranking the lighting to suit, but this new model looks delicious. As a side note, I saw that Autodesk is going to release "Stingray" at the GDC - a new game engine which'll link Maya perfectly, meaning you create your models UV etc and hit one button and bang! It's in Stingray running and looking perfect. This is one to watch...

Great news, I can finally try it ๐Ÿ™‚

YOu have allready 2 good bases for start, i have the 3D modelling ( as its my work ), but programming, coding, is completely out of question for me.

You can work with blueprints (the nodes system) instead of coding. It's more limited I guess, but still very complex. Now finally Vue it's going to be useful for something - I bought it some time ago. I'm going to create some terrain and import in UE4. Let's see what real time rendering can do.

Like the guy above said, you can work with blueprints. You have a few 'templates' already done for you, like first person, third person game. It automatically makes your job easier and you can get quite far with blueprints as far as I can tell. Of course, you can't extend the functionality as you can with coding. You have to use what's at the core of the game already. And mind you, it's quite rich and there's also a marketplace.

In fact blueprints are quite good, you can make a full functional game with them. But you have to learn a completely new way of doing it. I was kind of overwhelmed yesterday trying to add a character and some movement/textures without the templates.
