Suddenly my Asrock x399 pro got worthless. I hoped to upgrade my 1950x with gen 3 threadripper 🙁 Hopfully the new MB's is worth the new upgrades 😀

No You just came with another stupid comment...

I will remain skeptical, frankly if epic 2 cpus are drop in to older sp3 boards, there is little reason for amd to prevent compatibility. limiting the boards available while they are still in the process of gaining market-share in the hedt space, seems like a bad move.

Each time Intel does something right, this site goes "But AMD has [insert reason here]". Then, each time AMD does a bad thing or has a mishaps, this site goes "Well, you know, it's not that bad" (wording will vary). You cannot deny this.

I believe it is logic that up to two close generation cpus must be accepted by the same mobo for new or used upgrade ecosystems. The benefits from new chipset outdoes the cost. Be real. Don't be plebs and peasants.

It is a good method of generating additional revenue. Not exactly fair to consumers if true ...

Here comes the Intel Fanboys posting useless BS in an AMD thread with no actual content.

haha^...you do have a point but it works both ways also/ I would say it's 50/50 here and that is good.....always remember the same people praising AMD now we're bashing them not so long ago...nothing wrong with new/old fanboys. Threadripper is a different Beast so I can understand both sides of the argument

If its a move for progress then its okay with me 😀 And some will moan even if they do not need all them cores 😛 Oh! I forgot , ' Am I a intel or Amd fan boy? ' What a load of cobblers when you read these between the posts. Don't know why this comes about. Buy what you want to buy. 😉

No because Epyc is Pro (and already have a special Pro socket ) same base but not same CPU (a bit like 1151 vs 2066). There is not enough difference TR vs Epyc and TR vs Ryzen so i think that making this change, if it is confirmed of course, could benefit to the whole AMD CPU line, creating real distinctive line per name.

Soo my 2990Wx become by worthless ... baad amd...***** ***** ********* i have taichi x399... i have now three M.2 ssd s and want another,,, with pcie 4.... and pci-4 lanes too.. +another features.. witch now have 570 chipset mobos And for this i must buy NEW CPU..?!!?!?!? about 2000 usd .. +mobo with new chipset WR80..600-800usd ,, what the hell with you amd? i have HI END cpu 2990wx and now you make my cpu worthless fff.. , non upgradable ,, soo i loose 1800 usd, All intel fan have true and right to make eeess from whole amd ..this is crazy from amd,

AMD has retained BC where it could, sometimes breaking changes happen. This isn't like intel who moves a pin just to fuck with consumers.

If this is true it will really, really piss me off, I move from Intel to Threadripper because they mentioned before they were going to be compatible, so I went for the 1920x in the hopes of moving to 3xxx also I don't see how X399 can't benefit from it, There are already 32 cores 64 thread Threadripper, sure they can at least release a 24 and 32 Threadripper 3xxxx and then more than that move to a new board, I honestly hope there is something for x399 boards. And not I am not defending Intel, the thing that at least I know Intel will make me change boards every single new stupid CPU so I never buy top of the line for that reason, I Bought a top of the line X399 thinking it will last me longer, so I really hope at least one a couple a new CPUs comes for this platform.

Threadripper is the true enthusiastic and also professional line (for certain uses), so it's easy to see, in my opinion, how AMD wouldn't think the new PCIe standard, new memory controller, and whatever else is new wouldn't be optional. It's not like with the regular Ryzen, which is targeted at everyone, including people who need to consider every cent spent. However, you aren't buying TR if you are wanting for money. TR might be cheaper than Intel's X series, but it's still the expensive option. Isn't this why AMD is extending the mainstream line up to 16 cores?

AMD's gotta do what AMD's gotta do I guess - but it will irk me a little. I built my entire set up with the single goal of slapping a 3rd Gen'. Threadripper in it once they were released. Asus ROG Zenith Extreme + AU$1000 of water cooling kit including Heatkiller VRM block. Outcome - $1000's more and have to rebuild the hard-line loop... Such is life!

I would agree that greater market segmentation could help, but that would only be when amd already has significant market share(adoption is much slower than normal desktop), right now they are just barely scratching the hedt / server market, they dont have enough users yet, availabilty > segmentation at this point in time, especially with intel choking on their fabs.

You have to differentiate Ryzen 3000 from TR 3000 somehow. Who would buy this when you can have 3950X.

PCIe 4.0 would be a valid argument if Zen2 didn't work on AM4. If they change socked now, better make the motherboard really special or people will set AMD on fire, literally.
