Vega. This is probably the same thing which nVidia si doing with their Volta chip, but probably more specialized for Tesla's needs. Basically, very fast image processing and analysis, similar what we're doing in our brains when we see something ( "What a hottie out there in the corner !" ) ... but what is near instant for us is really difficult for computer software.

This is good for AMD. At the end, this is not Windows and DirectX games, is a completely different usage.

I thought they were using Nvidia's stuff right now?

They have Tegra 2's as their infotainment system, I'm not quite sure if they use anything else. Those Tegra/Pascal modules that required watercooling might be in there too, as the current Autopilot part... Its good to see more AMD stuff, and companies choosing them for their strengths. I would expect this to be fully custom, not a reworked Vega. They can pick an mix what modules they need.

AMD hardware probably costs only half of what Nvidia would be expecting from Tesla for similar purposes.

They snatched-up another client? Nice for them! As long as Intel did not get it I am happy lol. They also got alot of contracts over in China so Amd is on the rebound big-time!!! Intel start worrying hehe.

From what I understand, they use a combined Drive PX2/Titan X setup for both the infotainment and self driving in the new iterations of the Model S/X/3. I've read that the setup costs Tesla ~$8000 per unit - which would explain why they would want to work on their own custom SoC or shop to AMD, as that's nearly 1/4th the price of the Model 3. If Tesla wasn't doing the AP software in house I'd think they'd probably stick with Nvidia's top-bottom solution. But they are, so AMD's semi-custom division can probably offer similar performance at a way better price point.

“I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful,” said Musk. “I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish.”

Musk is a smart man and could really help change the world, but people need to stop trusting everything a smart and philanthropic person says. Many geniuses have said some pretty stupid things that their field of study has nothing to do with. Musk doesn't understand how AI really works; if he did, he'd know that it isn't a threat to us (except maybe taking our jobs, which would just create new ones). I'm not saying you specifically are taking his quotes seriously, I'm just referring to people in general.

Makes sense. After all, AMD's compute performance (something gamers completely ignore) is pretty good; very competitive with Nvidia's, anyway. Since AMD allows clients to tweak hardware specific to their needs while also offering a lower price point, it could really work in their favor. Sure, AMD's hardware is a bit more power hungry (something that isn't ideal in an electric car), but, any hardware can be made [relatively] energy-efficient when you've got software designed for it. In other words, Tesla engineers could potentially get equal or better performance-per-watt with custom AMD hardware than they do with Nvidia. Time will tell.

This should work out pretty damn well since Keller has the inside scoop on what AMD needs to tweak to make a custom chip for AI.

While true AI is really dangerous thing to experiment with. Cards do not use anything I would call AI. Cars use code which resembles more OCR with very high iteration rate. And computer learning algorithms similar to good chess programs. Today there may be 10 people on this planet who know how to code true AI. And I am quite sure that all of them are doing everything except AI.

I don't think they do. Quote "In addition, NVIDIA powers the awarding-winning infotainment systems and digital instrument clusters in every Model S and Model X." http://www.nvidia.com/object/tesla-and-nvidia.html

They have the Drive PX2 as the brains in the car, but the Titan's are in the datacenter, not in the car 🙂

Well that's a interesting twist on the whole "No driver." joke that popped up a few years ago, though I guess a fully driver-less car is still a ways off since manual intervention might be required for certain situations.
