I wonder how relevant these things are once we have cheap & regular access beyond the moon, we could just send any new computer with literal tons of shielding to keep it running

You never think about radiation-tolerance until your hardware is dead without an explanation. My brother is a field engineer in automation, he works for Yokogawa, they have had this strange problem, where many CPU cards were dying without an explanation, generally, control equipment is pretty rugged it tends to last many many years. After a very intense investigation, they discovered that the problem was the lack of shielding on certain components, basically, cosmic rays from solar flares were killing the CPU boards. To mitigate the problem they had to change many customers boards for a shielded revision of it. They probably lost millions, one of these CPU cards is over $10.000 USD
