Apparently they didn't make lots of money because of pirates *awkwardly laughs*

GTA5 was released in 2013 and launched on XBox 360 and PS3 first. Incredible as it may sound, the company did not have any profit yet had a loss of 8.3 million dollars, the created revenue was 1.4 billion dollars (I kid you not).
Since they made almost all of their money on consoles, they should think about making losses with an timely exclusive console launch. Not the best idea as it seems.

If anything, the game cost something between 150 and at the most, 250 million to make (and that's a very, very expansive game production already). The rest is crappy management and useless junk like financing blu ray and playstation royalty fees, keeping online gaming servers running, etc. One thing I'm only waiting for is people saying pc port and optimisation cost that much... can't be more an a few millions if the full game costs 250mil at maximum. And if they'd have done their work and didn't let PC gamers wait forever, they might have sold more copies there too.

Investment into development of new upcoming games, expanding staff to cover new projects etc, would also attribute to the "loss". Just checked on the cost. GTA5 cost, including marketing budget, $265 million to put out. The so called loss just represents their path to even bigger profits (while maintaining staff and offices)

Taking a persecutory glance at that financial report, and I can see no comments regarding development cost of GTAV. If memory serves, the development of GTAV began nearly ten years ago - so where is this comment coming from? All I can see from that report is that without GTAV, EA would have the keys to the castle by now. *shudders* Imagine going online in an EA-owned GTA universe...every time you shoot a prostitute and steal her money, it would actually cost you real money. EA: finding the most fun thing to do in a video game, and then charging you for it.

I did too. Then sold it when it came to PC. 🤓 I'm a sucker who bought the game twice. lol

I bought it on the PC on release, it was worth every penny just for the single player tbh.

Maybe they needed to make 1 Billion $ profit to break even, like nVidia.

I think they made a good deal on pc, almost 100% digital sales are surely more profitable. Also for the next game they can just use denuvo.

Same here, and I have like 450 hours played. It's one of the very few games where I went for full completionist in the story mode, and I still enjoy free-roaming even after that. Online is nice as well, but at this point in time it's so riddled with cheaters that even when I play "online", I go for solo session. Too bad that there are no single-player DLCs/expansions coming (I would gladly pay for them), they were awesome in GTAIV... 🙁

I have no idea how they spend so much money. Perhaps the management salaries are way off, or they want to hide money from tax office.

Royalties.
Benzies, however, alleges that the company's co-founders, brothers Sam and Dan Houser, forced him out after denying him over $93 million US in "profit-sharing payments" while he was on sabbatical.
A lot of money.

profit = tax don't worry they're fine 🙂

I wish someone would point out to me in the financial report, or any official report, that GTAV development cost prior to launch was £1b. I can't see it.
