New NAS models? DS920+ needs a upgrade. 10GB NIC? 2,5GB for SOHO NAS?

DS920+ needs a upgrade.
And price downgrade. Those NAS becoming too expensive. Building own NAS box would be 30-40% cheaper, yet more powerful and upgradeable. And there are plenty of Mini ITX NAS chassis.

I think there's always going to be a fairly large markup over building a traditional NAS system when Synology's software is really good and contains a fairly robust ecosystem at this point.

I've been there. Built my own NAS and bought aDS220+. Licensing, time saving and convenience cost. Maybe the price is not for everyone, but having to decide what parts, build, install, tweak, update, secure and set services are time and resource consuming. I also want cheaper prices, but let's be real, no company is your friend. I grew past tweak and control everything and every step of my hardware/home lab. I need rest, sleep and time to spend with family.

Active Business Backup solution from Synology saved my bacon...multiple times.

Yeah, I thought about that as well - then I considered the time it'd take me to learn about linux or freenas or whatever to best configure it. Then maintain it. Then do all these other things and having to buy a Plex lifetime on top of it. No, I used to think they were pretty expensive too, but the included software you get is so robust and generally powerful, as well as having a bunch of ways for you to configure it after that I just couldn't imagine bothering with the other idea anymore. If I were 10-15 years younger... sure. Maybe I'd be tempted by being able to add in much more powerful hardware and superfast network and tweak all that software just so, and so on... but, I don't know when I'd need any of those things now that I've got a DS920+ running for a couple of years now for my family and friends and it's doing fine AI processing our combined photo libraries and streaming video inside the house and out.

Same here. Didn't want to waste tons of hours, also didn't want to spend a lot of money so... got a 2nd hand DS918+ and couldn't be happier. If I end up wanting more (though I doubt that will be the case anytime soon), I'll go Synology for sure.
