600 $ for a small factor case with an AMD Ryzen R1600 CPU and 4 GB of DDR4 RAM - they are crazy.... As for the os there are a lot of user friendly linux distro's that offer for free everything that DSM has and more.

You are primarily paying for the convenience and ease of use... and it IS alot easier to use synology than having a "built it yourself" server project. In that context 600 usd isn't bad at all. That said, i'd much rather get one of the intel versions, which has much higher singlethread performance than this 1st gen ryzen cpu. Im still very happy with my old ds418play.

You're right - it it easier and more convenient - still the price is a lot - I remember signing the acquisition papers for a DS 920+ at work and price was 450 $...

30% faster single-thread, PCI-E and higher RAM capabilities... BUT... 30% slower multi-thread HW transcoding completely removed No included upgrade to 2.5 Gbps ports or higher (R1600 natively supports two 10 Gbps ports, so they purposefully removed them) Synology messed this one up BAD. Second hand DS920+ and DS918+ prices are starting to go up. What a mess...
