1.Tom Clancy's The Division 2.Stardew Valley 3.Far Cry Primal 4.Fallout 4 Season Pass 5.Far Cry Primal 6.Rise of the Tomb Raider 7.Factorio 8.Counter-Strike: Global Offensive 9.SUPERHOT 10.The Culling Saved everyone a click. Not sure if I am surprised The Division is number one or not. It seemed like such a vapid experience in the beta. Get behind cover, throw a few grenades, time your fire bursts, move onwards to the next cover-point and repeat until everyone is dead. I think we've all done that enough in video games over the last 20 years, and this game offers nothing new. Maybe I need to understand why this style of repeatable gameplay is desirable and popular.

Brilliant to see Factorio in the top ten, bought the game way back before it hit Steam and have been following it's progress ever since, great wee game.

Some people are easily entertained. Nothing wrong with that.

Just that it's the lowest common denominator of gaming, which refuses to innovate. When the setting/environment of a game could be interchangeable with any other without affecting the game mechanics, the mechanics become meaningless and inconsequential. So, you could change New York, to Paris, or Moscow, or Mars, or Pluto and the game would be exactly the same, just perhaps that your character would wear different clothes. I'll go farther and say you could change the time also, so it could be Victorian England, Medieval Europe, Futuristic Australia. And now let's go sci-fi and have it set in a world where robotic dinosaurs rule the planet, or dystopian future where genetically engineered humans have infected everyone but them. All of the above, and yet there I am, hiding behind cover and throwing grenades and timing shots for when other characters or players pop their heads up behind cover and I hit the trigger button. It's vapid gameplay mechanics, no matter how one chooses to dress it up - and by appealing to the lowest common denominator of tastes, you avoid and sidestep any chance of innovation. Games by committee and spreadsheets calculate nothing but themselves.

Which game genres have had major innovation lately? Imho the above described problem can be applied to more genres but just FPS.

if we add #3 and #5.. is there a possibility that far cry primal would be #1 in this listing?

R6: Siege is probably one of the most innovative games I've played in a while. From the outside it seems simple, it's CS with COD style aiming + destruction + class system -- but it's like brilliantly executed and combining it all adds all kinds awesome. Like it's definitely not "blow my mind innovation" but it's definitely the more interesting FPS Iv'e played in a while that can work in a competitive environment -- that is if they fix the lag stuff. That being said, there is tons of truly innovative games being developed, its just that they are all indie titles. Superhot, for example, is incredible. But 75% of the people here on Guru3D would just scoff at the graphics.

I can't imagine that there are that many people who have not played counterstrike by now that it is always on the top 10 list. I think the majority of the sales must be cheaters getting banned and having to buy a new copy.

GTAV innovated in the story mode with the ability to switch to different characters whilst on a mission. That's the only innovation I can think of.

1.6, source, GO - yup, I agree. I would say that having it on the front page and having it as a really cheap title helps. Market diffusion makes it long over the tipping point though. Once it got to a certain number of users, it had an easy stroll up a hill instead of a challenging climb up a mountain.

CS:GO added 150K concurrent players in the last year alone. It's not just cheaters. The game is being marketed to more people, especially in Asia. The tournament scene has picked up big time -- all the majors this year are having a million dollar prize, up from 250K last year. The game is growing due to the competitive scene. http://steamcharts.com/app/730 Look at the average number of players.

2.Stardew Valley 7.Factorio 10.The Culling The above games are all fantastic, especially for how cheap they are. Highly recommend checking them out, I can't really speak for the rest of the top 10.

Its a sad reality when that becomes an innovation.

What I'm trying to say, AAA titles these days offer little innovation. Indie's always different, that's true.

+1 for The Culling. Its a fun little game. Reminds me of The Hunger Games.
