Most things had a really crap year but 2020 was fantastic for gaming (and for just about anything you can do from home). Not so great for the end user trying to get their grubby mitts on one of the hot new tech items, but overall, the growth this year has been phenomenal. PS - miners are still the scum of the PC community. Bugger off.

Your comment relates to where consoles were bought, not who was buying them. It's a known fact that many were mass pre-ordered and bought by scalpers using bots to flood the online ordering systems.

I hate this type of story though, it's just a media bump for Sony and has nothing to do with genuine sales. It's known that manufacturers limit manufacturing numbers and manipulate sales numbers so every gen new records are set and drive media hype just that little bit more.

They still actually sold millions more consoles than GPUs/CPUs were sold for PC gamers... Both consoles and PC parts had and still have extremely high demand, but out of those 2 consoles sold millions, PC parts how many, thousands? Tens of thousands maybe? Pathetic for AMD(PC parts) and nvidia. Not to mention that the consoles sold by stores keep their MSRP, but for PC parts even the stores became scalpers with exorbitant prices... even more pathetic.
Heh, I saw PS5 here selling in stores for around 1500$ 😛 or 1200€.

This. And I would have expected them to sell about 5 million consoles especially in a year where people have never spent so much time at home, kids as well, as in the last decade or more. But then came 2020. 😀

It makes sense for every new Gen will have more sale than the last. Gaming was a niche Or mostly only for children when PS1 was released. Gaming now is extremely popular, and has become a norm.

They only make a profit if people buy from them. People who did are in a good financial position and didn't care. Do I agree with it? No, but it's not like Sony didn't try to meet demand (unlike some other companies this holiday season).

You missed the whole point of my comment... They limit how many they make so they control the headlines. All they need to do is make one more than they did for the previous launch and they claim a new record every time. It's misleading hype that a lot of people fall for.

I have quite some PS4 exclusives on my shelves that were meant to be only on playstation. They even have this mark "Only On Playstation" written on the box. Yet I see most of them in platforms like Steam and GOG these days. Some aren't even too old like Horizon Zero Dawn or Metal Gear Solid. A few titles might remain exclusives like God of War I guess. But most of the exclusives have been ported already and they still continue to port even more. I bet this won't change because it's not like they've stopped porting to other platforms.

There isn't a reason to own one yet over a PS4.
