Sony ain't stupid, this is clearly a reaction to intel they have gotten from inside sources at Microsoft. Kinda confirms what Microsoft are going to be releasing later this year.

Rumors of updated XBOX appeared in 2014... can't be sure how this is a confirmation.

It's the specification I'm talking 'bout.

AMD had it known long time ago. They promised move to denser lithography and that Consoles are 1st to come. That was the plan. With much higher power efficiency on 14nm ff, Chip in PS4 can clock much higher. Delivering higher performance even without architectural changes. But I guess their deal with AMD included those updates. Games will still be developed with 720/1080p in mind, but will be unleashed once run on next version of console. In the end it is backward compatible architecture.

bah you cant pass from 1080p to 4k only with better lito.... even if you clock it twice time faster it wont do it...

Will it be an add-on or a new console? Would existing PS4/XBONE owners get a free upgrade or discount? How would developers feel about programming code for two different versions of the same console? If you look at any of those questions it becomes clear that this is just a rumour and nothing else because it just isn't feasible or cost effective.

How much power exactly do they need? If they again go for 30fps with no AA, maybe they can get away with a level of power equivalent to 390X? That shouldn't be so much for the next gen GPUs, but it still sounds kind of much for an APU. Or am I overestimating the needs of console 4k?

Sure you can. Games that want to support 4K will just need to drop the visuals a lot

It's very possible for PS4 to use the "no AA" trick at higher res to cut corners: 1080p/30 AA to 4K/30 no AA. The extra power needed to upgrade from Full HD to Ultra HD will be closer to 2 times than 4 times. For Xbox one it will be more difficult coming from 900p/30... Console upgrades: 1 step forward 2 steps backwards. :3eyes:

SONY can suck my balls, the current PS4 has a locked GPU, i'm 100% sure that the new "improved console will just have the GPU unlocked and the CPU OC a bit". And don't tell me they won't be able to do this with the current one, the PS4 has a very good cooling system, as far as i remember it stays at 40-50'C.

As it stands now it would be closer to 4x imo

From now on I expect all console fanboys to answer to "but you don't need to upgrade a console every year..." when asked.

Well i said exactly that: They can't. PS4 can barely reach 1080p/30 and Xbox one 900p/30. The GPU in the current console is mid to low level, even if you can put LN2 on this GPU that will not magically make 4K/30 possible. :D

I was putting all the faith i don't have on my previous post to be "fair" with console fanboys. 🤓

Haha... what. They are planning to add UPGRADES to consoles?? You must buy a completely separate console and get rid of your "old" one?? That's hilarious. So, a PS4 lover will probably want to get the new 4.5..... that's like $800+ dollars of CONSOLES in.... 2 years or so? For $800 dollars, you could get a very decent computer, right? Man, Sony and MS are really gonna start robbing console users with these "console upgrades".

Agreed - probably to milk as much $ out of the home console / teevee gaming market before cloud computing takes over the planet. nvidia are already on board for cloud computing and gaming, they just lack modern games. And guys, shame on (some) of you for saying a console cannot currently get 2160P...they can, it's just the graphics will be naff to get there. As an aside, I will maintain my assertion the current gen of PS4 and xboner were released two years too soon. The evidence is happening and this just proves me right.

for 4k, i think rather than full 4k support, it more to basic support for video playback if they improve PS4/bump PS4 spec, imo probably it more for VR related i read somewhere that SONY admit their VR not as good as occulus as far consoles upgrades, if we look the history from nintendo to sony(and any other console ever released) .... they wont change anything so massive in the same generation it will be relative improvement and dev. stay with vanilla PS4 spec, and probably using new one for additional feature only

Ofc current console gen have enough GPU power to deliver 4K (2160p) at 30 FPS in some games like Tetris, Sweep Miner or Solitaire, anything newer AND with modern graphics will probably reach 2-5 FPS...MAX. LOL

Makes perfect sense tbh. I was looking at PS4 games list a few weeks ago and I was leaning towards it more than x1. Both companies have big plans. This video should shed some light on what they're thinking... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4b8dq8nSzY

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/nintendo64/images/6/63/Memoryexpansionpak_box.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120909221748 The good old days! I bet those console bum boys who said their ps4 was more 'powerful' than the average gaming PC are crying now. As others have said, the price of these combined you could of had a PC and cheaper games. Consoles hold gaming back, this generation has been the worst :bang:
i am not console fanboy but if i want to play game only, i will prefer console anyday than a pc more if there console exclusive games that i want to play gaming in PC run just good, but it also common that gaming in PC have issue... crashing, controller not working, really low fps etc.... console, for either better or worst all game usually run stable
