So, it will definitively have a different architecture from skylake - it's the only way to get some IPC gains that can at least offset the (probable) lower clocks. This is good, although I don't really think they can squeeze a lot more performance from a 14nm chip. I guess with so many years on the samey arch might have given them enough time to cook something impressive, or this will be pointless compared to 10th gen, aside from improving some temp and energy efficiency.

I admit I haven't been following Intel too closely but I'm pretty sure the first big departure in architecture is going to be Alderlake, which utilizes Golden Cove core architecture, which comes after RocketLake. I think there are cache improvements and stuff with rocketlake but it's not a radically different architecture.

I think we're basically saying the same thing, as a "big" change from skylake would basically be what you're saying, since not even that seems to be happening lately, thus the "big" - relative to what has been done lately.

Isn't this new cpu supposed to bring also 20 pci express lanes, 4 for the nvme, 16 for the gpu and 4 for the interconnect? I heard that would be a change too. ( unsure how is wired on current z490 )

Jim Keller is working on Intels next "big departure in architecture" its 3 - 5 years away.

I m still thinking that since 7nm does not give Ryzen a real edge, but just paired it up, 14nm vs 7nm is not end of the world.

This is pretty much confirmed. It will be Willow Cove based.

The wiring is already there in the new socket 1200. Current 10th gen was supposed to ship with it but it was removed.

I know, it's Golden Cove, which ships after Rocket Lake - definitely not 3-5 years away - it's slated for 2021. Rocket Lake itself has some architecture changes but the "big one" is coming with Alder's/Meteor.

I just do not get how they would do it. I expect a single pci lane to be connected to multiple devices, but not the contrary. So i expect the current nvme slots to not be possibly connected to both the 16x lanes of the gpu and the next lanes from the next cpu. I guess i ll see how it plays out.

My goodness another 14nm XD. I lost count at how much "+" they have right now. 9th and 10th gen has no real improvement from 8th and I bet 11th gen will be the same not unless they get their arch out of that ultra ancient 14nm process. Another boring release but hey there are some Intel cult existing out there who will eat anything they sell. Guess I'll need to hold on to my 8700k for another year or maybe things will change once AMD release theirs (at 10-20% IPC gain at 4.6ghz) now that's an "Improvement" for the better, not unlike Intel's 10th gen whom they "Improved" the temps for the worse and power consumption at hindsight.
