What if we're going to see for instance GTX 1x60 with GDDR6 and HBM2 variations? What if we're going to see AMD cards with HBM2 and Nvidia with GDDR6? This latter would make sense, if it's true Nvidia is gonna use Samsung for 14nm GPU and while AMD already used HBM.

HBM takes less power and its still faster tech. GDDR6 has no future. I think money is keeping old tech alive.

HBM is also substantially more expensive. There is always room for cheaper options, just be happy the cheap options are advancing and not stuck to GDDR5 for ever.

Different applications for different form factors. There is good use for each type of memory and that's exactly reason why new things are being developed. Only things you'll get from Samsung's GDDR6 vs GDDR5X are following: - If Samsung manages to launch GDDR6 in 2018 with 14Gbps, GDDR5X will be around 13~14 at that time (worth it at moment?) - need for new IMC (cost + time to market disadvantage) - people will have to figure way to OC this (if it would be possible at all at start) Release of DDR5? - Say hello to next set of intel's chipsets and sockets - only power efficiency upgrade as DDR4 are at proposed speeds If I would like to see something new on PC, it is: - HMC to blow everything out of water - PCIe 4.0 to make dummies realize that changing version number on physically same slot allows it to deliver 300W instead of burning at 75W... - PCIe data cable for external devices (Standardized)

Is this a JEDEC standard or is Samsung doing their own thing? Also that doesn't "kill" HBM as a form factor. It merely provides nice alternatives for cards that won't have their own interposer.
