My personal thoughts: "Good riddance!" As I use fingerprint scanner ONLY as a camera shutter button. And I strongly believe it is an absurdity to use something in security which you will never be able to change - just imagine for a second that somehow your fingerprint\iris data, in digital form, become available to hackers... Though I guess many users will be miffed, until they are brainwashed how "cool" iris or other body part scanner is.

The fingerprint scanner on my Samdung Galaxy S5 was useless since it was basically swiping across a rectangle with different levels of bumps, it made it worthless. The fingerprint scanner on my ZTE Axon 7 is the reason I even have a lock screen, typically in the past I always kept them off. It was lighting fast, as well placed as it could be for being on the back, and absolutely instantaneous. I couldn't understand why anyone would say it's slow. Now that I've "upgraded" to Nougat (purely for Daydream and now I'm returning my Daydream view after deeming it unusable and unsafe), everything went down the toilet including the instant fingerprint scanner. Now it feels like an eternity rather than the instant of contact. Battery life took a dive as well, and is now detected at 100-200 mAH less (though that may be just reading discrepancies). TL;DR - The right fingerprint scanner, on the right spot, on the right phone, is super useful But I am looking forward to iris scanners if I ever buy a Samsung again. I despise them as a company; crappy business practices in Canada, terrible/non-existent service, rude "managers", etc. And to top it all off they worked with the CIA to allow spying through their smart TVs. Between knowing all that, being denied an RMA of a new item defective out of the box, and knowing their future devices are going to be ridiculously overpriced while data mining for the CIA, seems highly unlike I'll get another Samsung phone ever again.

My S5 scanner was flat but slow to unlock using fingerprint, didn't like having to swipe My S7 is super quick and also flat, and doesn't need to swipe, just place your finger on it and you're in, best way to unlock my phone, and it uses a fallback system of a PIN if you need it (ie. after prune fingers in water or wearing gloves) Only takes milliseconds to unlock, especially now since the Nougat update

So no more unlocking samsung phones by just touching them, without inputting pin? Kind of meh. I love the feature on my Z5 compact... using it one handed and not having to possibly reveal my pin in public.

They will probably introduce infrared camera with optical or facial recognition as seen in Windows Hello.

I've never tried Samsung's fingerprint technology but Apple's fingerprint recognition has never worked for me. I still need a pin to unlock my iPad.

The finger print scanner on my S7 is very interesting, you program it, then it works flawlessly for the first two to three weeks and then suddenly it stops working, then over the next few weeks you find that you are touching further and further up the length of your thumb. It starts with the tip and I am now using around half way down to my first thumb joint. You then have to reprogram and start all over again.

Working fine on both Tab S2 and S6. As opposed to location based smart unlock. Which is finicky on both devices.

Wait...What!?!?! My fingerprint scanner on my Galaxy S7 works great! I loved it so much I even got a Kbyte bio-metric scanner for my pc for 12 bucks off of Amazon! I know a lot of people who even WANT the finger-print scanner. This is weird....I think Samsung is trying to find an excuse to just go to facial recognition. It's going to make it easier for ID theft. People with sneaky apps allowing access to portions of their phones. Almost sounds like someone wants it to happen.

Samsung is using Synaptics fps. They have had issues to get it reliable and are still struggling with it. Apple bought the marker leader back in 2010-2012 something so they use their own fps. Huawei, Sony, black-berry, xiaomi, etc are using Fingerprint Cards fps which is The current marker leader. You Should try one of FPC if you only tested samsung so far. Its a big difference in user experience and speed.
