This could be a big thing for FreeSync if others follow. 🙂

Yep it could. I have 2 LG OLEDs and would love them to have a freesync firmware update.

Big format game displays are going to be a big thing for PC users. Nvidia need to get their act together and make Gsync free. Otherwise Freesync will continue to gain more traction and its going to hurt Nvidia when users take into account both the GPU and display when buying or upgrading.

Don't forget Nvidia would also have to open source it as well. I think that ship has sailed. Since both MS and Intel have adopted Freesync/VRR/Adaptive Sync depending on what you want to call it. Freesync built into Xbox. Intel igpu will be AMD.

Wow that's a really good and cool move! Sadly, Nvidia will not open up or make Gsync open source. I'd be very surprised but that's actually bad for their business. They'd rather risk less sales than giving it all away, locking you down with your purchases either with having a BFG display first, or more likely, a Nvidia GPU before you get the other one. That's what they already did with Gsync monitors, and it has worked for them so far as it seems. That competition will only land if the next console generation (both XB and PS!) supports Freesync, THEN they really have a problem, and then they still can just say they support both Gsync and Freesync, not opening up anything at all. Because technically they can support both without even doing much work, and that's what looks the most likely to me.

As soon as there is a 4K HDR high variable HIGH refresh rate TV for an affordable price I stop using my PC monitor for gaming and get a compatible graphic card for that tv (unless that gpu it's 20-30% worse than the competition). Variable refresh rate is a one way trip.

I really think Nvidia will cash in on Gsync as long as they can. FreeSync will most likely be adopted as the universal choice at some point. Nvidia will then drop Gsync. It would be nice at some point if they worked to combine the two to make something that works wonderfully for all. They are cashing in on the premium that they charge for Gsync. This will add more pressure.

" but the new update might have brought HDMI 2.1 support as well. " NO HDMI 2.1 is not supported because it is not HDMI 2.1! NO 12BIT-16 BIT DEEP COLOER 4:2:0 OR 4:4:4 NO 4K 120HZ NO full EARC NO 48Gbps bandwidth NO

is like 2.0+ that is we are giving you something more over 2.0 I wish nvidia would make freeSync possible, that is a shame not to do it. That would mean kill Gsync i understand. But still would make the GPU more profitable for everyone.

Nice move. Even monitors have a much wider choice in Freesync than in G-Sync.

Now if only Nvidia trolls enabled freesync, would really like to test it on my new 144HZ FS monitor too

^Yup, 100% true^ + That is already happening 😛 I want smooth gameplay, i don't care if i have 95-145FPS no G-sync -> i go for 80-120FPS FreeSync It's no brainer -> kids are clever 🙄

I wonder if 2016 Samsung TVs will get this update 🙂 , still rocking my Samsung KS8000 TV.

this really just underscores AMD's strength in consoles and Samsung's confidence in new generation boxes. but it's a good thing

Doubt it. Even if technically feasible, I think Samsung would prefer you to buy their new 2018 TVs.

Somewhat pointless since it is only for 1080p.

Nvidia will come with their own name for the now standard adaptive sync, something like gsync 2 lol.

It would be good if so. They just need to swallow there pride. It would benefit them in the long run, i'm sure.

G-Sync used in Nvidia-based laptops is basically that already anyhow. I'd assume it wouldn't be a big problem to add support for that type of G-Sync to Desktop cards either if Nvidia truly wanted to do it and it should be usable with Adaptive Sync monitors that way.

If it's FreeSync, nVidia just needs to ditch G-Sync and simply adhere to the format, it's free for them to do so. Anyway, I have a 55" Q6F bought here in Switzerland but no firmware update available yet...
