AMD can literally knock on your door and take the chip back, so buying engineering samples is not recommended.

Considering the price of a 5800X, that's actually not so bad for a rare "early-access" chip with an iGPU.

Under what rights do they have to do this, and with what evidence can they provide you're the one who actually has it? Just because you bought it, doesn't mean it's in your possession.

Contract law. The Engineering sample is provided to a developer or OEM with explicit contractual obligations that the product will be returned (as it remains the property of) AMD. You have effectively purchased stolen property and the company can reclaim that property

🙄 big companies can find anyone given time, and EBAY will cough up your details with a court order to prevent being shut down for helping to traffic stolen goods. Of course it won't immediately return to AMD, first the transaction will be investigated and the chip will be held by the authorities as evidence until the proceedings have either ruled against you or turned you loose. But ebay will not be required to refund you based on the "as is" status of the sale.

Chip is more expensive than 5800x.

its actually quite boring really, amd contacts the FBI, FBI asks a judge for a warrant to get ebay to hand over the sale info, they then get a warrant to go after the seller and the buyer, they take the buyers pc completely as evidence, the user might get bail if they can afford it, and at the end they might get their shit back minus the cpu.

Seller: Hong Kong. Buyer: who knows where. AMD: Grrr... FBI: No can do.

What part of CAN BE BOUGHT ON EBAY eludes you? This isn't 2 guys meeting in a parking lot.

The only entity mildly interested might be a competitor, can't understand anyone who'd buy this for personal use.

What part of FBI only having jurisdiction in the USA eludes you? Anyway, it was a joke. Please check if anyone on ebay is selling a spare sense of humour. You could use it.

I don't know about that?....how good are the integrated graphics on this chip?

https://www.fbi.gov/about/leadership-and-structure/international-operations what part of you don't know what you're talking about can't you grasp? the FBI coordinates and co-operates in the reclamation of assets all the time. https://www.fbi.gov/investigate/white-collar-crime/piracy-ip-theft But please, continue to believe (incorrectly) that FBI only operates in the USA, when in fact it can operate in any country it has been granted cooperative right to do so.

Why not? Mysterious man Charters private jet to Hong Kong...purchases ryzen processor in parking lot then flies off into the night! (destination unknown)

@Astyanax the cost and the effort for amd get back their sample is jus not worth it. Now 500 for this cpu if the performance is close to 5800x and the apu graphics performance can approach gtx 1050ti . With the landscape of the gpu market atm this can be considered a good deal.... Witch is kind of tragic.

That's not up to you to determine. An engineering sample can have undisclosed instruction sets or a design feature that the company is not ready to reveal (or revealing it could harm the company) Intel for example, can, has done, and will again; send the law enforcement to collect misappropriated engineering samples and arrest those selling them - and I'm sure Hilbert can attest to there being cases of buyers having their purchase confiscated in some of these cases, though rarely brought up in tech media.

@Astyanax maybe if it was a month or two before official release of the zen 3 family but as things are it is just a wild cpu that everyone that watches closely reviews etc know pretty much spot on how it will perform .... Now if this was a 6700g with zen4 cores i can see how amd will take swift action 😛

LoL it doesn't work that way as all Charter and NoN Charter Flights have to file flight plans and have on board GPS locator even if it domestic or international and there no way a small place can travel 8000 miles

disconnect all that GPS stuff before take off!...no flight plan/take off from private airstrip.

Feels like it would be easier to buy it using a fake identity. It's not like the seller would be asking to see passports or anything. Even if the buyer fetched it from Hong Kong personally, to avoid losing the product in the customs, it would, on paper, be two different people when comparing ebay records and travellers. I imagine even now during the Covid situation, there are quite a few people flying to Hong Kong.

Hopefully you are joking about this idea. If not, those involved will get a first hand account of what it is like to be escorted back the ground by one or more fighter planes. Any aircraft not squawking an identity code gets everyone's attention. And the ramifications of that course of action will be life altering for all involved.
