I'm assuming these won't need a new motherboard (although this is Intel we are talking about). I'd be more interested in hearing about X599 and the 28 core part in all honesty, but I have a feeling we are not going to see that this year.

They should've called the 18-core the "9990". "9th gen i9 9990 at 3.99GHz with 2x9 cores compatible with the X299 chipset for $1999.99 plus $9.99 for shipping. Limit of 9 per customer. Is that enough 9s for you? Nein!"

They announced a new 28-core unlocked Xeon today (Xeon W-3175X). 3.1 GHz base, 4.3 GHz turbo, 38.5 MB cache, 265W TDP, 44 CPU lanes.

those prices... and of course there's going to be a new chipset. so get ready to buy another $400+ motherboard. and dear mother of god...still stuck with only 44 pcie lanes...at the top... R Threadripper 2920x at $650 has 64 pcie lanes so you can have 4x16 cards or any combination you can think of and that's only the 12/24 model.

That's the total platform lanes. It's 44 lanes from the CPU + 24 from the chipset, just like the current X299 platform.

What is this 9800x, a joke ? Intel is still not learning... This CPU will be behind the 9900k in performance for sure. And these HEDT CPUs are still overpriced. Good luck intel, Threadripper is gaining on me.

It's like that quad core from x299 that was DOA... they literally learn nothing, I swear. Intel truly deserve having their ass handed to them by AMD.

Will be interesting to see how these CPU's benchmark. And with 68 PCI-E lanes this would help plenty if people are planning to run a couple of GPU's + M.2 NVMe drives in RAID 0 with VROC. All lanes at x16. What i find troubling though, is the part where it says 'up to' 68 lanes. Only time will tell whether is just bullshit marketing or legit specs that perform well.

I don't see why not? These CPUs use the same X299 platform that currently offers 68 lanes (44 from CPU + 24 from chipset).

So, $1200 for Intel's 12c/24t processor... or... $1300 for AMDs 24c/48t processor... Hm....such a tough decision. Sadly these will still sell, to someone, for some...reason....

tl;dr: I do agree with you, but intel does not need to care. - - - - Intel does not need to sell them. That's why price is still high. Who wants them will have to pay. That's because reason for "shortage" of CPUs comes from intel making 14nm chips for others, having limited remaining capacity for themselves. This means they just pack boxes and send them to those who ordered them => money. And that's why they stated that they will have no problem to meet revenue target... as their production capacity is not lower, and plants are fully utilized. Do you think they would rent their production capacity if making CPUs and selling them was more profitable? Only if they had spare capacity. But they actually reduced their own production, this clearly means they make more cash from Forge-as-a-Service. As result, AMD can eat entire CPU business for year or two and intel will not feel a thing. Only damage will come from loss of mindshare as big companies may look bit more objectively on AMD vs. intel solution and consider AMD's options as something that may actually do job more economically. Hell, since intel started talking about GPU and hired Koduri who gave dog Sh*7 about gaming, but enthusiastically talked about compute... I wrote around that time: "intel's GPU will be primary compute one". Maybe even AI-focused. In few years intel may shift their core business form CPUs to GPUs for servers.

Thermal Design Power. With goo between chip and IHS, you need stronger cooler on IHS to keel IHS cooler, because heat transfer between Chip and IHS is poor. Use solder between Chip and IHS, and suddenly weaker cooling is enough as temperature difference between Chip and IHS is much smaller. (heat resistance is smaller) Power consumption can be same as before.
