i wouldnt care. the jump in perf (vs 1070) combined with the lower price than a 1080, is worth it. i sold my 1070, as my newer games would not be stable at 60hz (1440p) and higher IQ settings. the 1080 is another 200-250$ and faster than what i really need right now (volta is coming anyway).

I assume Flashing the Gpu BIOS will be the solution to this?

Actually it is good thing.Think about it a bit,if it weren't locked AIB's would sort through ASICs and pick winners (higher quality ASICs and overclock it ) This way we have higher chance to win silicone lottery because ASICs are not binned, just all put in the same basket (good and bad)

So...it's a good thing because instead of knowing what you are buying is a better chip, you now no longer know, and it's a toss up? Hm.....

Cannot be overclocked? I wonder what Unwinder has to say about that...

I for one can see this rumor being true, as with only one SMX disabled, the 1070ti will come extremely close to the 1080 performance. Once you do a decent cooler wit some good overclock then it will definitely surpass the 1080 reference card in performance.

My thinking would be that they are selling 1060/1070's like hot cakes, and not so many 1080/Ti's. Having to use the good 1080 chips for a 1070Ti, would help get rid of stock, before a new Generation comes in. Crippling them for almost everyone (except maybe some knowledgable overclockers, or people daring to brick their GPU, which is a small crowd, ie US 🙂) would ensure that the existing stock of 1080's isn't cannibalized, and the vendors can still sell them. It'll probably be a limited run though, until stock runs out.

What? The 1080 is about 100-110$ more than the 1070. The 1070 Ti just simply doesn't make any sense. I mean, NV just doesn't want to see the Vega56 be faster than the 1070. That is the fact.

You win the silicone lottery with a chip that can't be overclocked - yay!

After awhile they maybe unlocked with a new bios? Maybe trying to squeeze as many 1080 sales they can first?

It can be manually overclocked just AIBs cant sell overclocked chips

Well for you to know (factory overclocked) you have to pay higher price, instead of that you pay lover with non factory overclocked and possibly win silicone lottery from the fact that chips aren't binned

So looks like even if this were a true rumor, people really don't understand what this means. If it's true, it means all AiB cards will only ship with reference clock speeds. That does not mean GPU boost 3.0 will be locked at 1600mhz. It will still boost to as high as it can given temperature and power limit. That means it will boost just like any other pascal card, to anywhere from 1800-2000mhz out of the box. Those cards that have better coolers will generally boost a good bit higher than reference. Take a look at Titan X. GPU Clock Core 1,417 MHz GPU Boost clock 1,531 MHz When does it ever boost only to 1500~ mhz? Never. Pretty much every card will do 1800mhz or better. For those that think the 1070Ti will be locked to 1600~mhz from vbios, I can gurantee that's not happening. That would require radically different vbios to enforce low clock speeds. Which no one is going to do because reasons. So in the end, this rumor means absolutely nothing.

I don't really see what the issue is. Unless I'm not understanding something correctly, you can still manually OC. It seems to me they're basically just narrowing the out-of-the-box frequency range, which is good because the wide range may have backfired in some reviews (with any Pascal product, not just this). As Hilbert pointed out, some of these higher speeds (especially if OEMs release pre-overclocked versions) could cause issues with 1080s.

I know right? Isn't it great having that perfect tube of caulk, or that oddly smooth lubricant when you visit the proctologist, or implants without scar tissue?:p;) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon

Hahaha , i didn't even noticed it (mumble: f***ing auto correct) 🙂:):)

At first I also thought the same, that they cannot be OC'ed at all. Which is weird enough on its own. But reading further I'm quite positive(as others stated already) that it simply means the AIB partners can only sell them with max 1,607/1,683MHz clocks as reference. E.g: 1080Ti FE base/boost: 1,480/1,582MHz MSI 1080Ti Trio-X: 1,569/1,683MHz Which means no extra OC variants out of the box, like GB OC, Strix, MSI Gaming X etc(read: factory overclocked). Quote from the translated text: "if you want to be stronger performance only can be manual overclocking" It's quite obvious assuming the text is correctly translated or close at least.

So...i repeat So...it's a good thing because instead of knowing what you are buying is a better chip, you now no longer know, and it's a toss up? Hm..... I'm sorry, but paying more for a guarantee, because that's what you want, is and always will be a better solution to "Hey, i want to win the silicon lottery, lets see how many times i can buy a graphics card and hopefully do just that!" Yeah....definitely not better.

With Pascal cards you are not getting a better chip by buying a Gigabyte G1 or MSI gaming card over reference. The only binned cards that are guaranteed to run at X frequency and marketed as such are cards like EVGA k1ngpin. My reference card hits over 2100mhz at default voltage, more than a binned evga k1ngpin.

What's the latest rumour of Volta's possible release date? The only articles I find are all outdated, many before the flop of Vega.
