Yup, they usually take the default design as reference. But apart from that, you don't need to have much airflow for good custom designed coolers, so the xxx% more airflow they come with is rather useless info, just there for marketing.

Looks nice on it's own or in an open case but stick it in 99% of the cases people have at home and once upside down it will look like any other graphics card

i agree, i know my TwinFrozr 970 looks quite childish, but this just looks cheap. and i dont like the colour scheme some of the best looking cards on the market (imo) are the evga non reference coolers, they look ace

absolutely cheap and childish looking. i sold a pair of poseidons a while ago (which were nominally good looking) and wanted to stick with asus but, after some internal debate, i had to go with the plain jane looking evga cards. theyre understated and thats actually a good thing. now.. the new gene viii.. i could put my hands all over that.
