Not too shabby.

so basically, if you sync your 4790k cores to all boost 4.4ghz, you probably won't even see a 5% improvement from Skylake? Seriously it's Haswell/Ivy Bridge/Broadwell all over again. Seems Sandy Bridge was the final proper upgrade for years to come

Look like.. I should keep my Non-K I5-3470? No upgrade this year? 🙁

Good and in depth review as always. Nothing new under the sky here from Intel in terms of processor performance. I guess this is the effect of amd not having anything competitive on the high end section. I will see what intel brings out next or if Zen delivers at least something.

Think it's safe to say you could probably keep it for the next 5 years, lol. It's sad how they get roughly the same performance out of it, and it even uses a little more power, ahaha.

I don't know what to think, and I say that not as some skeptical complainer for the sake of it but from someone considering a whole pc overhaul. I want to upgrade to Win 10 but don't want to do it on my existing motherboard because as far as I can tell there is no such thing as a 'retail' key for windows anymore, all versions I can find to buy are not oem per se but still function the same. So I have to ponder whether a whole platform upgrade is worth it for this incremental increase yet again. If this chipset had PCI 4.0 it would be a lot more futureproof. I also doubt that Kabylake will be 4.0 though and that there will be 4ghz 6 core cpus that aren't overpriced extreme chipsets for at least 3 more years

Were you even cpu bottlenecked in Tomb Raider and Infinite Hill?

Fantastic review as always HH. Is there any chance you could add some emulation benchmarks in, in the near future or going forward. You'd be the first PC review site to do so, i think.:D Say, Dolphin and PCSX2.

It's the same in every review it is not faster exactly then similarly clocked 3770k, 4790k or 4770k or even 2600k in games... 😀

notthatbad.jpg I mean the past 3 generations combined have brought us maybe 20-30% extra performance, while skylake alone seems to bring an extra 20% to the table. I believe an upgrade is starting to sound reasonable for Nehalem and Sandy users (myself included). We'd see around 50% extra performance in multithreaded tasks. But I'll wait. Kabbylake next year. There is no chance I'm going to upgrade before AMD shows us Zen.

not too bad either... it's an intel.

Isn't 'not to shabby' == 'not too bad'?

Sure there are retail keys for win10... either you upgrade from your current retail key win7 or 8 or 8.1, or you simply buy one from m$ site with additional price tag.

dx11, for sure. Can't wait to see how this will change once dx12 is around and the faster cores work together, possibly not bringing 5% performance boost, but 5 or more % per core...

About 13+ % low res gaming performance compared to i7 4790k and with 200MHz lower boost clock. Not total fail. Not at all. But im more interested in moar cores. So I will try to hold out for when the higher-end platform will be updated.

lol it was the habit to see "not too good" about intel...

I would not be basing my upgrade habits around windows 10. Upgrade when you feel you have to, not because your afraid of losing out $100 and getting data mined up the rear. But great review as usual for something that doesn't inspire

I was going to buy one until I saw the price. 😛uke2:

If you're going to base an upgrade around Win10, id say wait for the first service pack. I know they're usually awhile after release, but by then a new i5/i7 will probably be out..so...yeah. Choices.
