It would be great for architectural visualization, but also in games, such effects would add a good amount of immersion.

been out for a while, I think they just got it plugged into UE4 and made a video. Nothing (new) to see here.

You would be impressed if you knew how GI works. Basically until recently, photons emitted from the light did not bounce further from surfaces to other surfaces. Something like light->surface. With GI, that surface further reflects the photons, contributing to the environment. It doesn't seem like much, but it does contribute to photorealism. This is mainly the reason why the whole scene looks so good. As a side effect, shadows no longer need simulated opacity. They will just flow with the environment.

lol lamp shade doesn't even break on the fall and stops rolling unrealistically. not buying. Is there anything out yet that uses UE4? I saw on wikipedia that it has been under development since 2003....how can they have something computer related in development for so long without it being outdated by the time it is ready for release? What sort of things would they be coding today for release 10 years from now. Obviously the graphics are good in this...AI?

The demo is using Geomerics' Enlighten middle ware. Battlefield 3 and 4 use it also.

Well, we had global illumination for ages actually. These engines are showcasing this only now due to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One being the first consoles to support it.

Nah, I think it's just because UE4 has got it plugged into their Game Engine and Geomerics wanted to make a video about it. They've got it in Unity and MAX and Maya too for the whole asset pipeline.

Yeah but 3dsmax and maya are different things right? They are not proper game engines. I've used mentalray and vray renderers inside maya, and from what I've seen I'm quite sure those GI engines are not designed to offer real-time rendering.

They are not "game engine" as API for game, but you will not do a game without them. I work mainly on Autocad or inventor and use 3Dmax or maya for render and animation.. But i see real time GI since 10years in thoses software, along that soft natural light sources .. ( the next big since in UE4 ).. Its nice to see the technic we use in 3D scene creation with professional softwares are finally coming to games, this said, its nothing really new.. This said, im really sad to see them still use Deferred lighting, when they can use forward ( + ) lighting as main render. Real time GI was introduced in Dirt2 by AMD as example

They may not be game engines but allow simulation of art assets when you are creating textures so you can get a really good idea how it'll look when you plug it into the actual game engine.
