I was hoping it wouldn't extend past 3 slots, but it looks like the shroud at least does.

From wccftech:
Starting with the details, the PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 Red Devil series graphics card comes with a quad-slot design (either 3.5 or 3.8-slot) and rocks a brand new shroud design that includes triple-fans, each fan with 9 fan blades and an aluminum shroud cover that features an aggressive aesthetic with bright red RGB accents. The card will be housing a custom PCB design that will be powered by a triple 8-pin connector interface.
IF it is true, AMD made fun of Nvidia about their huge cooling size but it seems that almost all non reference designs will be three or quad slots like Nvidia ones (ASUS TUF is already confirmed quad slot for 7900). . Of course, nobody will laugh of them now about "fitting the brick in the case" because they are the good guys, they want to squeeze every drop of performance to give you for almost free compared to the darth leather jacket, etc.

AMD only made fun of them because there is no 2.x slot option at all. I think we will see the non-reference cards get pushed harder than the reference cards. This honestly makes a ton of since to give people various options.

Now we need reviews! Red Devils always performed well.

I really hate this new trend of fitting gigantic coolers on GPUs! I remember when the Asus 3070 Noctua was released and everyone thought the cooler was too big and now everyone is doing the same...

While it challenges SFF builders like myself, I do welcome the cool and quiet. The 4080 sound/temp levels look very promising per the reviews.

Red Devils are always bulky and tbh, i don't like the design i prefer a shroud and external exhaust no matter whether red/green. i do have a Liquid Devil that's 2 slot (because of DP/HDMI) and if it's all as i've heard rumor of (7900xt/x) i may go that route again just for the quicker build (and warranty)

you hit the nail on the head. plus, the performance of the ref. cards may make them more in demand for those upgrading from 2-3 gen old gpu's. my advice is to buy direct from AMD in the first month because w/c enthusiasts snap them up as they get the first waterblocks at generally a lower price. after the AIB cards come out the price of the ref. cards may actually go up (from 3rd parties) on Amazon/New Egg

I'm going to read release day reviews then buy one from AMD if I like what I see. I am planning on power limiting the card to 200-225w which I know is blasphemy. The 4080 power limited to 250w loses 6% perf and limited to 200w loses 13% perf. Really lovely at lower power so I am hoping something similar comes out of these 7900 cards so I can spend a good bit less. I'm a big fan of near silent computing.

I like quiet too, my 3080FTW3 undervolted has been great. I ordered a 4080 (I like RT, DLSS) and hope it will do well too with its larger cooler and such.

This has been around since HD 7970 Strix, GTX 680 Igame, Gigabyte GTX 680 SOC just to name a few.

Yes but these coolers on the 4090 and 4080's are very quiet verses the jet engines of old.

Sure they are when they are using 4 slots and weight more than 2 kilos.

Since it has to be spelled out for some of you: The issue surrounding coolers is not the availability of large coolers for a specific design... it is the requirement of large coolers for a specific design.

People bitch about new gen size every gen. Go water if you want small.

Yes, you're right. I still want to see how hot it runs and the noise - maybe they forced this solution just to make fun of nvidia at a cost of having a vacuum cleaner near you...
