So the ransomware was attacking older firmware? Whoever has that kind of old firmware kinda deserves it lol

And or exposing it to the internet. I know there is some functionality that requires it (like a VPN server) but it just seems like asking for trouble. I have a QNAP but it's JUST a NAS for me and I also block it from speaking outbound.

The newest 5.x bricked mine. I was forced to roll back to the last 4.x that was released. So is it better to upgrade and guarantee a bricked system? Or leave the old firmware installed and run a small risk of infection?

It's not a guarantee, I am running 5.x without issue. That's not to minimize your problem, but because it happened to you does not mean it's the rule and not the exception. I do steer clear of beta versions though.
