This is a dumb decision , I am sure these kind of things will backfire. If streaming would work great, it would never be a problem, but it doesn't. There is always input lag.

One day, someone will jail break the PS5... and PS5 emulation will come to PC in about 5 years running well.

I purchased some stuff for the office the other day and saw PS5 in our local store. The initial model. For 999 EUR.
That made me laugh - I commented to the store staff that nobody would buy it for that speculative price in their sane mind. They started hissing at me and said that supply was low and I didn't understand anything. Had a nice giggle.
The only thing that will make the PS5 platform compelling for me is that it will allow you to run PS3 games.
I own a jailbroken PS3, which was delidded + a new custom fan + some air vent holes in the case + SSD drive + mClassic from Marseille to upscale the image.
I absolutely love the fact that you can run PS1 / PS2 (practically all of them, as I don't have the PHAT model) and PS3 games with it. Such a fantastic video game generation. It's so sad that most of those games can be run only via emulation or with PS3.
I don't get why Sony is so slow on this, as PS5 can run all of the PS3 games with an emulation. On top of that, only Sony can emulate them perfectly.
But then again, PS3 emulation on PC is making leaps as well. The second PC emulation will be flawless, and PS5 will lose its potential appeal (to me, at least) as from the modern games, there are like 2-3 that are actually interesting. Rest is either on PC, or, well, trash.

why would they ? they plan to resell most of the games ....for a 3rd time !

Emulation is a problem for those companies that want to sell remasters.
Just look at GTA5. They managed to sell the same game on 3 generations of PlayStations.
Silva
They are not interested in supporting older generation games because they want to sell those games (or newer ones) for the new console.
Remember: companies don't make money selling hardware, they make money selling games and subscriptions.

Sony and Ninty now both have locked emulation behind a paywall at this point, and no one seems to have batted a eye, how did they sneak that by everyone. lol

Ps3 emulation on PC is coming along so nicely why would I care about playing it on a locked down console with less graphics.

This is sad, and is one of the reasons why I never transitioned from PC to a console. Backwards compatibility issues from Windows to Windows are still present (HW can cause problems too), but it's day and night compared to the closed-off systems most consoled have.

i know more ppl with pc + console, than ppl with either or.
how about +4 players together/at the same time?
how many games can you play on 1 pc with split screen? right.
regarding emu
funny how a lot of ppl think that "work" is free.
and they try to save on cost, not spend more, to get out of the red with Sony as mother company.
reminds me of folks whining about the ads before movies, yet are perfectly fine with it,
once they are asked if they are willing to pay "double", to watch just the movie (nothing before)...

Aside from what others have said about how Sony can't re-sell games, I suspect Lance doesn't know much about emulation. There are already PS3 emulators out there. The Cell processor is a complicated and vastly different architecture to the modified x86_64 arch they're using now. Same goes with the PS3's Nvidia GPU. It's very taxing to perform such translations. While Sony could definitely do a better job than these community-driven reverse-engineering projects, there's a lot that can go wrong. Even if Sony manages to make all games play, that doesn't mean they will play smoothly.
It's relatively effortless to emulate PS1/PS2, but PS3, while technically possible, is not at all worth Sony's effort. I don't think including such an emulator would drive more sales, so, the ROI just isn't there.

I can kind of see why they wouldn't want to invest more money into emulation for PS3 titles after spending $380 million on purchasing Gaikai, would be nice to have it all emulated locally on one machine however.
Glad I kept my old Fat PS3 with full emulation for PS1/PS2 titles.

sony never be interested in BC they always want use rebuy the games, instead being able to pop the disc on new system and play them. this one thing MS has done right.
I have no instead in any thing cloud/streaming based and never will
I wish mine didnt up and have BGA soilder failure that was causing system to ylod? other wise i would still have mine

And this is one of the main reasons I stopped buying consoles. Why waste money on something that will become paperweights the moment a new generation is released? With PC I keep being able to play it all.
