Be careful Hilbert, please grab a seatbelt when you turn it on. 😉 P.S. great preview as always.

That is a freaking badass cooler.

2920X @ 649 looks like good bang for buck being 12 cores and a fair price that an average consumer might pay - they do for gfx cards so why not cpus. But $1799 for SOHO "consumer class"? Who will pay that and what software other than a benchmark would actually use it? Our software is so far behind these core counts, we need actual progress in frequency increase rather than gluing cores together. I would gladly take 8 cores at 5GHz over 16 cores at 3.5.

There has been some bad sockets for threadripper out there in beginning, is this still a problem? Lotes VS Foxconn The screws did not catch very well on some of them.

Great preview, Hilbert. Looking forward to the review. I'm surprised about the Wraith Ripper cooler's design. Blocking the top PCIe slot is simply not acceptable, especially for customers who want multi-GPU configurations. Whoever came up with this design needs to get their head examined.

hahaha...agree 😛 God bless AMD!

Yup, massive design flaw and completely unacceptable like you said. Also, most motherboard manufacturers recommend using the fist PCIe slot in single GPU configurations.

the cooler looks really beefy but darn amd you really had to close the first slot ? darn ^^ ! Other than that thanks for the tech pr0n boss !

Weird how Asus isn't making any new TR boards, yet they're making 19 boards just for Z390... Anyway, it's not too often where the box cooler looks nicer than the average 3rd party cooler.

Most typos tend to be just that but sometimes, you better not make them.
Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX You have reached your final destination, for this review - The 1990WX has no less than 32 cores and 64-threads. The proc has a 4.2 GHz turbo allowance and runs a 3.0 GHz base clock. This massive manycore product will be sold for 799 USD, which is 56 USD per core. This processor under full stress has a 250 Watt TDP.
(page 1) You meant 1799$USD right, Hilbert?

On that note - it's 2990WX, not 1990WX.

cheers for the sharp eyes guys, fixed.

Wow this is out of my Budget but damm Amd think you got enough cores there Buddy lol?! Moar Cores! Iam joking of course this is one bad-ass set-up would love to own some thing like this. That cooler is also eye-candy. What was it called thread-slasher or something? Speaking of brand-names I guess anything is better then ass-rock haha.

LC is a must for this kind of horsepower, especially considering anyone who buys these will probably try to overclock them a bit, I think it's safe to say the air cooler can be completely ignored at this price range, doesn't matter how "cool" it looks. As for the versions, not sure which one I should drool more for: 2950X with 4.4!!! Ghz turbo ( And with some luck it will work @ 4.5 too ), and 16 cores is WAY more than enough for anything you can do at home (unless a researcher or similar) or 2970WX ... 24 cores for 1300 $ ... that's an insane amount of computing power for a bit more than what Intel charged on their 8-core HEDT just two years ago ! (Which also didn't go higher than 4.2-4.3 unless very exotic cooling ... talking about Broadwell-E) --- Finally, the 32c monster: Yes, it's way cheaper than any similar-core-count Xeon, but 1800 $ is still a huge amount of money. Plus, it's very unlikely it will have more actual usable performance than the 24 core version, as unless using virtual machines or multiple parallel operations, no "home" software is capable of using that many cores (not even 4K video encoders have that many threads) Too bad those only launch in October. Guess I should start saving until then... time to finally ditch the crappy 6-core Broadwell-E @ 4.1 Ghz ;-)

You do realize the base clocks are modest, and that 4.4Ghz isn't an all-core turbo, right? The stock cooler will very certainly be sufficient for this, as long as you don't overclock. I'm sure it might reach around 70C under full load for several hours and XFR might not fully reach its peak performance, but the stock cooler definitely should be sufficient to keep the CPU healthy and maintain base clocks. I would agree that if you intend to OC, LC is a necessity.

Well it's obviously not for the likes of you. There are Artificial Intelligence and machine learning people who can use these, as well as folks rending to software like Solid Works, CAD, Lightwave, Studio Max and Maya among just a few that can use just as many cores as they can get theirhands on without paying for server farm time. Game developers and even some studio audio and video development software can use many cores. Just because your mind is stuck in the past doesn't mean there aren't regular people who want and need server farm class machine hardware for learning and development. Also VM administrators could use one to create test VM farms and networks out of a single machine.

Man that task manager shot had me rolling with all those cores! Great preview Hilbert!

Good preview 😛 You'll need to assemble new Benchmark System with TR2 64GB at 3466 CL14 😀 MOAR of everything ! AMD's overclockers went at it to try and overclock the CPU over 5GHz on all cores to run CINEBENCH. However, we believe they can score over 8000 points, as this isn't their top run and was just done live on CPUs that we are told weren't binned closely. Either way, this performance is crazy high and impressive, and we can't wait to see how things turn out at launch! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/00ae15fca5ab5715e2a99179c58c1a1d82d2da985dec7d77fc62551d72867aa0.jpg?w=800&h=457
http://i67.tinypic.com/2jeqx75.jpg
