Is that heatspreader really necessary or is it just for show? I see it gets up to 50 degrees but what does that really mean? Anyone know the operating tolerances for this device?

Well...that's early!
EDIT:
Hilbert, what's the CPU usage like at 200k IOPS? Are these "drives" cpu-limited?

Those prices look healthier than Samsung 950's. Samsung has had the whole market at its disposal for too long. Maybe 950 was beating this Plextor in most tests, although not all, but the price difference would win me over, provided this drive otherwise isn't causing troubles and is compatible.

Samsung 960 PRO/EVO are coming out very soon, so if I was in the market for such drive I would wait a bit to see what these upcoming drives offer and how they are priced.

What is the practical application of such a fast SSD?

i sometimes have to questions "your" tips/recommendations.
why would you turn off write cache flushing?
not one of the major ssd makers if checked/used, not even ms/msdn is recommending it (except for some intel drives) unless THE SSD/HDD has a build-in backup battery (to write the data to disc in case of problems).
this has nothing to do with the computer losing power, so a UPS will NOT help..

FWIW, I was looking to get all my Steam games on an ultra fast storage mechanism. I looked at NVMe and to get large sizes (2GB+) would have cost a fortune (let alone special cards needed for multiple M2's).
So I went with 6x OCZ Trion 150 $99 480GB SSDs with a cheap used SAS3003 PCIe 3.0 8x controller from Ebay, RAID0:

As I dont have my OS install on this (just games, all cloud) I dont even worry about reliability (its been perfect since install mind you). When I add 2x more 480GB's Ill have over 3TB with a total of 3500MB/s.
Just putting it out there as an alternative for the adventurous!

At least this one has MLC like the RD400 from Toshiba. I'm very tired of seeing that "3D NAND" TLC crap.

Some games will show a good speed up in load times with this Plextor over my Samsung 512GB 850 Pro.
Far Cry 2 (yeah I still play it now and then lol ) has horrendous load times once you have a bunch of saved games for example!
Other games like Star Citizen could also do with more speed it seems to me without checking exactly where its loading bottleneck is, I am sure there are many more games that would benefit from a drive like this one.
Games aside there are plenty of other things that would like more speed, big database work certainly would, I currently load things like this into a RAMDrive to speed them up.
My next system will definitely have something like this in it ^^

Thank you for one more nice review Hilbert Hagedoorn!
To increase the lifespan and performance of SSD with enough RAM and
an UPS(uninterruptible power supply) we can use a software like PrimoCache(old FancyCache)
with Defer-Write Enabled, PrimoCache is like Samsung RAPID with lots more options/functions...
It is a very interesting software, the explanation https://www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/primo-cache/example-reduce-ssd-wear.html
Here PrimoCache is set as Write Only with Defer-Write enabled and Windows HD policy
without "Enable write caching on the drive", the Windows System caches the reads(no way to disable)
and PrimoCache the writes...
