So we have removed 1 chipset fan and we will place 2 or 3 fan on stockage units depending on the board...
Lol... let see what it bring before flaming down...
3rd part may have better solution to cool it down too.
It will be an interesting review when G3D will have one, i can't wait for it 🙂

No thanks, Gen3 is fast enough for the coming 10 years.

The cooler design shown looks super bad, big block with minimal surface area and a fan with 1-3mm long blades.
Many motherboards have a much larger heatsink then these, fanless should be possible.

This is indeed a blast from the past, as I can already hear the specific sound those tiny ass coolers would make... no thanks, lol.

nand quality is still the most important part for everyday performance, not the interface.
see how sn570 based on new bics5 loads 25% faster than rocket pcie4 that cost an arm and a leg when x570 fisrt appeared, even though it's pcie3 and dramless.

We are reaching the point where M.2 will become more a hassle than a convenience, requiring active cooling on tight places can be done but will limit other things around, specially if you are going to need a tall heatsink with a fan on it.
I think PCIe Gen 4 is enough for most, specially laptops, PCIe gen 4 can do 7k mb/s, the issue atm is that we are getting bursty ssds, that can't sustain those speeds, most ssds just peak into 7k while the SLC cache is active, once it drops, the sustains drop down between 700-2000 (depending on the ssd). I don't see a reason why increase the 14k if we will drop again to 1k (on average). Specially for laptops that barely have space for active cooling for the CPU/GPU.
Now for desktops, for enthusiasts that PCIe gen4 isn't enough, its time to move to U.2/U.3, that will allow better heatsinks and even direct cooling not being on the motherboard, and likely much better sustains. Either way, M.2 is binded to size, that atm we are 4tb max era, i see it reaching 8tb when the arch improves and lowers its size, but bigger than that its going to take a long time, while U.3 will allow SSDs much bigger, atm we have 15tb already, and likely we will reach 30tb in the next years, but the problem is the cost still.

I've been holding out for PCIE gen 5 drives for a new build (why not, right?), but at this point I think I'm just going to get a primo gen 4 drive instead. Some other posts have suggested the prices will be sky high, too. Especially for larger models, which is what I'd want.
Additional speed I doubt I'll ever notice, an active cooler, and a high price seems like something I can skip. Maybe things will change over time, but that's something I can worry about then. I figure a WD Black or Samsung 990 is now in my future.

Bound to fail? can't see gamers rushing for pci-e 5.0 nvme at extra cost/heat/noise over fast pci-e 4.0 nvme drives.

this dont seem like good trend, whats next 50w storage drives? with 2 slot cooling? most motherboards are cramped enough with tower cooler and these huge gpu cooling solutions, less everything is water cooled

As already mentioned, gamers can do just fine with an el-cheapo m2 drive already. Even a decent SSD is still pretty fast.
The rare cases where something as fast this new drive are "worth it" seem trivial compared to adding a new mechanical failure point, adding more noise and paying a premium price to do so.

Yay diminishing returns. I have 980 Pro NVMe (boot drive) and 870 QVO SATA (storage drive). No difference between them in day to day tasks like running games from. Let's not kid ourselves, we only bought these expensive NVMe drives because we got tricked by synthetic benchmark numbers which bear no resemblance to real world usage.
