To be fair, with the current unforgiving pricing scheme of graphics cards, anyone planning to get one of the top models should also be able to afford a new PSU. It's sad RTX 4070 is supposed to consume so much as well, but I reckon the cheapest plastic bubble model is going to go for 700 euros over here, so I wouldn't get one anyway.

What about e-waste and all that? My PSU is barely 10 months old and it's a high quality 1000W unit. It has 6 8pin connectors. Sounds like those with 1000W and higher PSUs would need new cable by PSU manufacturers. 4x8pin to 12VHPWR cable (direct to PSU, not adapter) would solve this and allow 12VHPWR to run at full 600W.

if high end, check the A of combined line... most of the time you will have enough A to run the adaptator in good condition. Also don't get 1st on those new "standard" for now only few brand follow it... it can be a new "BTX like" standard that will "revolutionate" how PC are lol Let it maturate and we will see...

So I have a quality 850w PSU from Corsair and suddenly it's not good enough for the next GPUs??? F*** this!

it'll handle a 4070 fine.

I hope so. I even hope it can handle a 4080 without overclock.

Yup this is some next level bullcrap. All enthusiasts who recently upgraded to higher end RTX30 cards also bought new PSUs last couple of years. So now we have to get rid of our perfectly capable PSUs and buy new one again? No. PSU companies need to make proper cables and sort this mess out, preferably free of charge with proof of receipt, but I guess only Noctua does that with coolers and adapters, too bad they don't make PSUs.

I think you're good to go with Corsair. I recently purchased an EVGA 650w for my home theater system and for some reason I don't trust it?...$59.99... (I'm weird like that though)

I'm not worried: I'd never buy a GPU with TDP over 200W or 250€. So all of these new extreme GPUs are out of option for me. At this point I'll probably buy a 3070 equivalent in the distant future that only uses the motherboard PCIe Power...

Gee who woulda thought... Whether it was Molex to PCIe 6-pins, or a pair of 6-pins to an 8-pin, such adapters were always a bad idea. Though like @Silva, I'd rather just go with a more sane level of power consumption.

I would never buy gpu with 12pin... 8pin card pull to much wattage which create way more heat then i like. If card is pushing 200+ wattage i have almost no interest in it before i "set up" with evga to get this 1070ti only card i ever bought where 6pin for a reason heat output diffrence is noticable to me. Sadly i dont see 150w card being thing anymore be lucky if they under 200w

I almost can see it ... This gen most likely you will be able to undervolt it with out loosing much... Like the 3xxx series . Meanwhile dramatically decreasing consumption . It seems both AMD and Nvidia to get this little bit of extra performance they push the cards way past their efficiency/performance sweet spot .

i'm shocked!

They should do 4 x 8pin adapters. There's no reason a properly built adapter would get hot, but 8 pin PCIE cables carrying more than 150w might.

EVGA Power Supplies have been half price for over a month(What do they know?). Tempted to buy a couple 1600W platinum and use the adaptors. MSI the MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 power supply unit for ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 and alike should be release soon and be able to handle New Intel furnace with RTX 4080/RTX4090.(Wonder what the crazy price is on these will be) Adapters will be fine,I think I just convinced myself on a EVGA 1600W Platinum lol

So with a new PSU, what does one actually have to look for to be cool with next gen MB's and GPUs? ATX 3.2ß What's the 12pin GPU connecter called?

It's in the title 🙂 12VHPWR

And I just bought a shiny new 850w psu with atx 2.52 std, guess i will buy a custom gpu with regular pins not these 12pin, problem solved 😛

RX6600XT has an 8pin connector and is rated for only 160W TDP. I think that's really reasonable! Sadly it's just a medium/low level GPU, but I'd buy if it wasn't overpriced. My RX580 consumes more power! (185W TDP)
